1/ Two really fun reviews just landed back to back in Current Biology, both on a question I never get tired of: why did animals take over when they did? One argues animals engineered their own world. The other argues oxygen and temperature had to line up first.

🚨 ‘Earth system engineers’ and the cumulative impact of organisms in deep time
https://t.co/JB77naMVX0

Honored to be among the long author list of this new paper out now in @Trends_Ecol_Evo that looks to bridge the ecosystem engineering and paleontological literature.

[Will Gearty @willgearty]

@Trends_Ecol_Evo Huge shoutout to Simon Darroch, Michelle Casey, Ali Cribb, and @RealKateLyons for somehow summarizing all of the ideas our working group has had over the last several years.

[Will Gearty @willgearty]

@Trends_Ecol_Evo 'Earth system engineering' combines core tenets of ecosystem engineering, niche construction 🏗️, and legacy effects ⌚️. We illustrate this framework using the 🦴fossil record, and show how it can be applied across the tree of life, and throughout Earth history 🌎.

[Will Gearty @willgearty]

@Trends_Ecol_Evo In the paper, we present a new 🕸️framework applicable to both modern and ancient engineering-type effects. To this end, we propose a new term – 🌍‘Earth system engineering’ – to describe 🦠biological processes that alter the 🏢structure and 🚂function of planetary spheres.
