I was struck when visiting the ancient monuments on the banks of the Nile by the many bas reliefs of Egyptian soldiers taking Nubians into slavery at sites like Medinet Habu and Abu Simbel.  Sites that date back over 3,000 years.   

These scenes, with African captives bound, shackled and yoked, are shocking and have a vivid quality that appears almost modern in style.

Might the ArchBishop of Canterbury now wish to further flex her moral and ethical muscles and demonstrate her extraordinary clarity of thought and suggest to General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi President of Egypt, that he might wish join her campaign for reparations.

She could suggest that the good General divert money away from the crumbling Pyramids and Temples of Upper Egypt and towards the descendants of the Nubians on the lower reaches of the Nile who his ancestors so ruthlessly conquered and enslaved.

Let’s not forget reparations from Egypt too. Here’s evidence from a relief of colonial overlords talking black Africans - bound and shackled - into slavery. Let those pyramids crumble they shouldn’t be maintained or preserved at the expense of the oppressed from the global south
