KMPDU #NAIROBI BRANCH GETS A STABLE HOME FOR THE FIRST TIME 🎊🔺️

A new chapter begins for Nairobi doctors as the KMPDU Nairobi Branch establishes its first-ever dedicated office, providing the Union's largest branch with a stable operational base.

The Nairobi Branch Office was officially launched today in a ceremony attended by KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah, National Chairman Dr. Abidan Mwachi, Deputy National Treasurer Dr. Renoh Omoro, and the entire Nairobi Branch leadership.

For many years, KMPDU's largest branch operated without a dedicated office despite serving the highest concentration of doctors in the country. The establishment of the office ushers in a new era of stronger member representation, improved service delivery, and institutional excellence.

The leadership noted that the occasion was about more than opening an office. It marked the laying of a firm foundation for professionalism through robust systems, enduring structures, and accountable leadership, ensuring that the Union remains stronger, more responsive, and better equipped to serve both present and future generations of doctors.

The new office will serve as a central hub for member support, branch operations, and the continued advancement of doctors' welfare across Nairobi County.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Nairobi Branch, led by Dr. Bill Muriuki, paid a courtesy visit to the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) to introduce the branch’s new leadership and discuss the implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

The delegation was received by PPB Chief Executive Officer Dr. Ahmed Mohamed, who reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to implementing the CBA and confirmed that employees covered under the agreement are remunerated in accordance with its provisions.

The engagement reaffirmed PPB’s commitment to fair labour practices, constructive dialogue and continued engagement with employee representatives.

With unemployment at 37% and youth unemployment over 45%, this isn’t just policy reform; it’s survival strategy.

As Minister Fillemon Wise Immanuel said:

“Our planning must not only be about job quantity, but also quality; fair wages and safe workplaces.”

For unions, this is a chance to act before the layoffs, influencing how growth happens, not just reacting when it fails workers.

Across Africa, labour must push for the same: make job impact a policy requirement. Because growth without jobs is hollow.

Madagascar’s billionaire Hassanein Hiridjee calls the informal sector “the lung of Africa.” He’s right; if given finance, energy, and fair policy, it could become the continent’s real growth engine.

But growth without rights risks deepening precarity. If Africa’s future lies in the informal economy, then unions and worker movements must make sure it also becomes a space for decent work, fair taxation, and shared prosperity, not just survival.
