🇺🇸🇨🇳 The U.S. just gave the B-2 a ship-killer

For years the B-2 Spirit was known for one thing, slipping deep into enemy territory and flattening land targets, nuclear if it came to that.
Now it's got a new job, sinking ships.

On June 27, during a Pacific drill called Valiant Shield, a B-2 fired an AGM-158C LRASM, a long-range anti-ship missile, at a retired U.S. warship 200-plus miles off Guam. First time the Air Force has ever shown the bomber pulling it off.

The LRASM is no dumb rocket. It's stealthy, flies low over the water, picks its own target, and slams in with a 1,000-pound warhead built to gut a destroyer.

Now bolt that missile onto the one plane on earth that can walk through the thickest air defenses unseen. A stealth bomber firing a stealth missile from hundreds of miles out. The other side barely sees either one coming.

Gen. Kevin Schneider, who runs Pacific Air Forces: "By prioritizing counter-maritime strike operations, we can maintain a decisive edge over adversaries…"

And everyone knows who "adversaries" means. China spent a decade building walls of missiles and air defenses to shove U.S. ships and planes back from its coast, and it now fields the biggest navy in the world. This is Washington's answer, one B-2 hunting multiple warships in a single run, carriers included, and staying invisible while it does.

The kill itself was a team effort. New Zealand P-8s, Japanese jets and destroyers, then a Japanese sub torpedo to put the old ship under. Not just an American flex, the whole Pacific club showing up together.

The quiet part might be the scariest. If they're comfortable showing this off in public, the B-2's successor, the B-21 Raider, is almost certainly being built to do it even better. Call the whole thing a preview, and a message Beijing won't miss.
