Biology Teacher, NYS Master Teacher, Sub Area Rep for Biology STANYS, Teacher Fellow: Cold Spring Harbor Lab, Brookhaven Natl Lab, 3D Molecular Designs MSOE
Another INCREDIBLE DAY @DNALC this year's DNA Barcode Symposium. Hundreds of SS across LI, including Shelter Island, presented their original DNA projects & shared ideas! @NYSMTP@STANYSorg
One of the GREATEST nights of the year! Suffolk STANYS @STANYSorg Awards Dinner! Honoring EXCELLENCE in Science teachers & students across Long Island.
Join LISEC at Museum Day! @MiddleCountryPL from 4 -7 pm where you can learn about our Environmental & Educational programs in @PortJeffNY where this summer we will be running a DNA Barcoding Camp this August & Microplastics in the Fall @NYSMTP@STANYSorg@nyseagrant
Know any students grades 7–12 who love science? 🔬
Tell them about our Summer Field Science + DNA Barcoding Camp in Port Jefferson! "Barcode the Bay" Explore biodiversity in PJ Harbor w hands-on field + lab work @STANYSorg@NYSMTP@PortJeffNY

What a way to spend the weekend! Science teacher leaders from across NYS meeting in Albany for PD & fall conference planning. #STANYS26 Lots of great things to share w the folks back home & excited about our fall workshops! "Getting Messy & Biotechy" @NYSMTP@STANYSorg
It was such an honor to work w such incredible people on an awesome project! I'm so excited! She looks beautiful! Christening TOMORROW! #LISEC

One (of many) side interests -I've been privileged to work w an INCREDIBLE team of volunteers building the Caleb Brewster. Come see our work & celebrate local/national history. Join us on May 2nd in Port Jefferson! #LISEC@PortJeffNY
Shelter Island Science HS Students went into our elementary school over the past few days to share our excitement over @NASAArtemis launch tonight! They were "Artemis Ambassadors," and now lots of excited kids are watching tonight! Science Inspiration! @NYSMTP@STANYSorg
NYSSLS in Bloom! STANYS Spring Conference is starting NOW! @STANYSorg So happy to see so many old friends! Hope to see many of you at my session at 10 am on Microplastics @NYSMTP@nyseagrant
Ques for c. elegans researchers One of my students noticed a weird worm that appeared to be leaking all of its guts out of the vulva. We'd expect to see this out the anus, this might be important based on SS work, but we weren't sure if it was common. Pls help Tnx @NYSMTP@STANYS
IMHO HS Sci Research should not be about contests or prizes. The learning curve for @nanopore sequencing has been steep. We wanted a quick easy way to go from FASTQ to Phred, so a student coded one! -Research INSPIRING ss to EXPLORE & SOLVE problems @NYSMTP@STANYSorg@DNALC
TFW, you get a student excited about a project. She works on it for 6 mos. gets GREAT results & only then you realize you gave her the WRONG protein file to simuate binding. She's very excited about doing the REAL project now! -Learning experience @STANYSorg@NYSMTP@buildmodels
Did a post mortem on the 26 blizzard in my Shelter Island Marine Sci class used 500 & 700 MB historical data for interpretation & analysis NOT just look at a GFS surface map TY online meteorologists for your TIME & EDUCATION! YOU help INSPIRE scientists @AccuRayno@nynjpaweather
Thank you @portjeffrotary for inviting me to speak about our Environmental & Educational programs @ #LISEC LI Seaport & Eco Center. I'm excited about working together! Getting kids outside, learning about their local ecosystems, DNA Science and creating Environmental Stewards!
@KuhnboBio We had something similar in my DNA summer camp! We got the parasite DNA instead of the bug! Wonder what we'd find if we kept resampling the DNA extracts w many types of primers! Oh, if we only had unlimited time......
HS student using @pioreactor to track yeast growth when treated w various levels of caffeine -eventually for directed evolution of caffeine tolerant mutants Blue = Control Red = low conc. Green not the highest caffeine -but maybe the sweet spot for selection? @NYSMTP@STANYSorg
EXCITING day in our Lab! SI HS Ss have been learning how to use @nanopore DNA sequencing technology We've tried & failed many times We just got our longest high quality read @ 73,000 bases! It's 100% coverage & 100% similarity to staphlococcus aureus! @DNALC@STANYSorg@NYSMTP
Last night was Shelter Island's 61st annual Science Fair! My 20th -this is the most NextGen thing we do! Ss select topics that interest THEM vapes/cosmetics/microplastics make claims, design valid experiments & justify their claim w data analysis They were amazing @NYSMTP@stanys
