Elementary students should not be taking standardized tests. Because testing becomes the focus of education instead of learning. We take away the fun and excitement of learning, playing, exploring, & creating. We create test takers instead of problem solvers and innovators.

They come into high school without knowing what a clause is. Can’t spot a subject, can’t find a verb, can’t punctuate a thought.

Not because they’re incapable, but because no one has taught them. The mechanics of language have been treated like trivia.

And so they struggle, not just with writing, but with reasoning, because the structure of thought lives in the structure of language.

@FixingEducation I would have switched to speech or language so I could work with small groups or one on one. I would not have become a classroom teacher bound to test scores.

@educator4ever36 I could say so much here as a mom of a late diagnosed ASD and neurodivergence in my family….its so misunderstood. They need to be held accountable, but it’s nuanced.
