1 in 9 trauma transfers are discharged home from the ED without further intervention... should virtual consultation become a part of trauma care?

Our paper published this week suggests that virtual consultation could substantially reduce trauma care costs. We analyzed >700,000 trauma transfers, and nearly 1 in 9 were discharged home without further services.

The majority of these centered around a few common themes:
-Further imaging was performed (CT, MRI)
-Hand injuries
-Facial fractures
-Ophthalmologic injuries
-Dental injuries
-Neurosurgical consultation

Virtual consultation and decision tools such as the mBIG score may be able to tackle a lot of these transfers that could otherwise be managed symptomatically or through outpatient referral.

The UK-REBOA study found no survival benefit at 90 days and *increased* risk of early death. There were some minor differences between the groups, but after adjusting for confounders, the findings were the same.
