Building on Bitcoin: Provenance and Recursion

Today was a great day for Art on Bitcoin! Three great Gen Art collections launched today. I'd like to highlight two techniques that all of them used.

1. Parent-Child Provenance. This is a way to clearly show the provenance of the whole collection on Bitcoin. It is called Parent-Child because each work is a child of the same "Collection" Parent. This is a newer feature of Ordinals that is becoming standard for new collections and beneficial for collectors, marketplaces, and everyone because the collection provenance is stored in a standard way on-chain on Bitcoin, and not offchain.

2. Recursive Inscriptions. This is a powerful feature of Ordinals that allows other inscriptions to be the building blocks for new work. (For the CS inclined, recursion forms a graph or family tree, so the same "parent/child" terms are sometimes used to reference recursion. I'll stick to calling them building blocks to avoid confusion with Parent-Child Provenance.) Recursion allows for complex programs and gen art to be created from code (like with p5.js and Three.js). Many code building blocks have already been inscribed, and they can be used by artists via Recursive Inscriptions. When you dig into Recursion, you'll see how truly powerful this is, and the amazing possibilities for the future!
