@XianyangCB @thocpodcast @GangloSaxon Well its more like if you cleaned your house in a way that attracted extra dirt every time you did it vs a way that took more work. There are ways to manage the river that mitigate the problem people knew about them, but they took more money/time so they often didn't get done.

@thocpodcast @XianyangCB @GangloSaxon So its not just get rid of the dams, you have to get rid of some dams, keep others and then have an entire engineering/labour system to keep the rest of it running. Otherwise the river will just overflow its banks (though in a less dramatic way) every year.

@thocpodcast @XianyangCB @GangloSaxon Well there were ways to manage the river better, and they knew about them, but they required more upkeep. It involves lots of dredging, wiers, drainage canals, overflow ponds, etc. When Dynasties kept them up they drastically reduced instances/intensities of flooding.

@XianyangCB @thocpodcast @GangloSaxon It's more complicated than 'damns = bad' but essentially once you start building dams and levees to solve the problem you have to keep building more and more as the problem grows worse and worse.

It has a huge amount of silt, damns and other things slow down the flow of water, which makes more silt deposit vs washing out to sea. This raises the level of the river and makes it breach its banks and flood more dramatically
