Gayle King just did what most people in media are too polite to do.

After Hayden Panettiere died, her estranged mother released a statement that managed to turn a eulogy into a final dig — calling her own daughter “amazing and talented… but on the wrong path.”

Gayle’s response was perfect: “Thanks, Mom, for nothing.”

Then she went further: “It makes me so sad of the opportunity that you have after your daughter’s death that that’s what you choose to leave us with.”

A loving mother, especially one who had already lost another child, would have used that moment for pure grief and pure praise. She would have talked about the light her daughter brought, the talent, the fight, and the love that was still there even through the distance. Instead, the statement became one last correction of the record.

That’s not mourning. That’s score-settling. And Gayle called it exactly what it was.

No soft language. No both-sides nonsense. Just clear honesty at a time when it was needed.

That kind of candor is rare on morning television. Good for her.
