Sounds like a very different situation from yours. Great that you are able to gift that much, but guests should not be counted upon to do so.

They definitely shouldn't be throwing a 270 guest wedding if they need financial support.

If you cannot afford to treat your guests as guests instead of walking wallets, you need to downsize your wedding or not have one.

You say women used to do this all the time. Yes, they did. And babies frequently died due to pathogens in the milk.
