My latest essay "Talking History" is out in @JournalGIM today. So often the onus and blame are placed on people with addiction, not on the systems that fail to support them. By talking to patients about history, I try to change that.

@DrPoorman The ridiculous thing is that the PA was denied because Belbuca is "not approved for pain"... Belbuca is not approved for OUD so...not approved for anything?
@DrPoorman I just had a PA for buprenorphine (Belbuca) denied because it wasn't covered for pain. But insurance has been paying for oxycodone for years...
@DrSarahWakeman I was recently hospitalized for 7d myself. Despite fully understanding the hospital work flow, my own medical limitations, and COVID restrictions, I still felt totally caged. Our pts, regardless of substance use hx, are humans. Arbitrary policing of pts is cruelty, NOT medicine.
This is so true throughout many fields in medicine and just heartbreaking everytime as a provider! Great work @HJRyooAli!

Moving next week and finally throwing out this dear dear part of my heart and soul. Looks like some of my multicolored notes need some updating though... #medstudentlife#finallyanattending
