It’s ridiculous that they think this matters. They arrived on the scene and found one person incapacitated by another. Each exchange accusations, “he’s racist” vs “he stabbed me,” only one of which was serious and verifiable. They could have checked as easily as lifting the victim’s shirt. They didn’t. They trusted an unserious, unimportant, unverifiable accusation over a pressing, gravely serious request for aid purely because of the victim’s race. They killed him because he was white.

One thing that makes the Vendée rebellion against the Jacobins so interesting is that it was one of the few regions of France where the aristocracy had stayed generally local and done its duty, rather than succumbing to the effete foppery of Versailles

As a result, the people of the Vendée trusted them to lead the rebellion against the godless, egalitarian enemies of man and God alike in Paris

So you got this organic rising of all elements of traditional society--church, land, and people--against the Jacobins, rather than the detested elites siding with foreign enemies you saw happen with the armies in Germany and the Low Countries

It serves as a reminder of duty. As Robert E Lee said, "You should do your duty in all things. You can never do more. You should never wish to do less". Because some of the Vendée aristocracy did that, it and the people on whom it relied and depended had a chance of fighting back the Revolution. It was overwhelmed, and it lost, but it at least had a real chance
