Thoughts after watching the all 22 film
- same opinion on Bryce. Incapable of reading a defense and throwing from the pocket
- run game is worse in the rhino that it is normally somehow. Draws too many guys in the box maybe?
- Run game is at its best with a base 5 man line, 4 wide look. There isn’t a lack of physicality on the line, so it’s best when you just let those guys work.
- offensive line just seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time a lot. So close to breaking so many runs. Too many mental breakdowns tho.
- some of the route concepts I don’t love
- pass pro is not bad at all the QB just doesn’t step up in the pocket (ever).
- Beck’s game plan of abandoning the play action/movement throw was disappointing. I understand you want (need) to develop Bryce into a pocket presence, but you still have to win the game. I get why you may try and start with more throws from the pocket, but you have to revert back when you realize he’s not able to do so.
- Run game was effective early, not sure why we abandoned.
- overall, I better understand why people are upset with Beck, but Underwood is still the main problem. I don’t think it’s fair to judge him completely until he has a QB that can actually play the position. Hopefully Bryce can develop into that if they decide to stick with him, but if it’s someone else, so be it.
@Liam_GoBlue1 The two teams that loaded the box last year were Ohio state and Oklahoma. How effective was the run game against those teams? I have an answer it was not effective at all besides the first play against OSU
Bryce Underwood with Chip Lindsey
2,428 yards , 11 TDS and 9 interceptions, 72.2 QBR (28th in CFB)
Austin Simmons with Chip Lindsey (through 5 games)
1,287 yards, 13 TOUCHDOWNS, NO INTERCEPTIONS, 78.4 QBR( 25th in CFB)
Devin Dampier with Jason Beck (2025)
2,490 yards, 24 TDS, 5 INTS, 84.4 QBR (7th in CFB)
Bryce Underwood with Jason Back (through 5 games)
881 yards, 5TDS, 4 INTS, 56.6 QBR(70th in CFB)
Everyone, please use your brain for a second and really think about what the issue is here.
Bros a senior and spends his time either hurt or on the bench. Tight ends open all over the field btw, but blame ur coach. Wish the senior is being a leader in a time of desperation but no he’s too busy shit talking to teenage fans in group chats and then begs them not to share it. What a joke.
I said it a few times yesterday, but I think the reason Jim Harbaugh not putting any effort into recruiting Bryce Underwood tells you everything you need to know.
Say what you want about Harbaugh, troll all you want
BUT
Harbaugh IS a great coach and has succeeded everywhere he’s went. Probably one of the best things he does is evaluate talent and you can’t really deny that.
Choosing not to pursue Bryce was a damn near disturbing example of foreshadowing.
These next two weeks will determine the rest of Kyle Whittingham’s Michigan tenure, and probably his career at this point.
I said he won’t survive 6-6, but after sleeping on it, I don’t think the record really matters, cause you could start playing complementary football and still go 6-6 with the schedule we have left.
He has to show us something that is worth keeping him around. Turning over this roster/staff again is not ideal, so you should all be rooting for his success regardless of what you think about him. Having said that, he should not be here if this is the product that continues to show up on Saturdays.
In this bye week, Kyle MUST do the following imo.
1. Announce Tommy Carr as the starter tomorrow. The Bryce experiment is officially over. We have seen Tommy be a way better quarterback in one drive than Bryce has been in 18 games. Plus, the offense sucks so it needs a spark regardless, and Whittingham needs to make a move to save his job. Give him two weeks to prepare, as there is really nothing left to further evaluate on the competition.
2. Start disciplining the players for a lack of said discipline. You can’t coach not being an idiot and hurting your team, so it’s time to punish them in practice. Harding said they did down ups for every holding penalty in practice. Notice how there was not one holding in the game yesterday. Shit is absolutely ridiculous and embarrassing and it’s time to do something about it. We don’t play like this at Michigan.
3.Figure out the run game. This is Michigan we don’t rush for 79 yards in a game especially against Minnesota. Whether it’s scheme, situational play calling or physicality, figure it out because it is embarrassing.
4. Fix whatever the locker room issue is. Whether it is a cancer or lack of faith in the staff, this team looks dead half of the time. I feel like I care more than the players. Figure out whatever the problem is immediately.
Other thoughts
- I’ll wait till I see Tommy play to evaluate Beck any further. He’s had too much success elsewhere to be this bad. I have a feeling it’s way more of a Bryce issue, but we will see on the 17th.
- tackling sucked yesterday too but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt that it was because they were on the field the entire game
- playoffs hopes are obviously pretty much zero but this season still has a lot to offer. Getting a look at our future QB (hopefully) and what will be the future of this program. Players and coaches are fighting for their jobs right now. Everyone in the building. So as tempting as it is to check out as a fan, there is still a lot to be engaged in.
Chip Lindsey put up 45 points on the #8 team in the country today
Jason Beck had a top 5 offense in the country last year
But somehow they both magically suck at Michigan🤔
Becks situational play calling is not good right now, no question, but it’s way more of a Bryce problem that it is a Beck one.
The second half of the season can three different ways:
A- Tommy Carr becomes the starter, isn’t good either, staff is blamed (as they should be) for lack of development of both QB’s, discipline. Whitt probably gets fired after 6-6 and we move on
B- Tommy Carr plays good, we get a spark, the rest of the team becomes alive because of it and we move into the offseason with momentum. No matter what the record is Whitt keeps his job and we move on from the Bryce era but have our QB for the future.
C- Bryce continues to play for no reason, we get killed by any team with a pulse and Whitt gets fired before The Game.
Considering we have never seen Bryce make a throw close to the one Tommy threw against UTEP, he should start after the bye week. Nothing to lose. This offense sucks right now. Put him in and see what you have.
Also, Whitt’s leash is 10x shorter than any other coach’s. With a new AD/President coming in and his age, he won’t survive 6-6. He’s gotta make a big-time move to try to salvage something.
