Not demolishing Woodlawn's (structurally-sound & economically-viable) history is something @LightfootForChi and @J1Ramann should prioritize. Thank you to @landmarksill, @Pres_Chicago, & @gabrielpiemonte for spotlighting the issue. Learn more: https://t.co/he35aOmSTw
Join us at the Chicago Architecture Center today at noon for a Preservation Snapshots Lecture on LI's 2019 Most Endangered Historic Places! @chiarchitecture (Photo: Eric Allix Rogers) https://t.co/iOI5CwEO0M
Great coverage by @BlairKamin / @ChicagoTribune. Nowhere is @LandmarksIll comment “A troubling trend with this year’s most endangered sites is the number of historic places that face demolition despite strong and active community support for preservation” more true than Woodlawn.
It's not just the Helmut Jahn-designed Thompson Center. Other notable buildings, including a Frank Lloyd Wright cottage, are at risk of demolition, Landmarks Illinois says in announcing its annual most endangered places list. New column: https://t.co/gm8cOAr7nD
.@CrainsChicago: These are the most endangered buildings in Illinois "Historical bank building in Woodlawn... among the dozen sites (3 in Chicago) on @LandmarksIll' 25th annual list of valued properties at risk of being lost." @Dennis_Rodkin@Pres_Chicago https://t.co/yw729RYl8o
.@HPHS1893: The people who now live in Woodlawn will understand this message from the Land Bank - 'You and your community's history are disposable.' The Land Bank chose the demolition/displacement over restoration/revitalization. @Pres_Chicago@ArchiJake@WardMiller7@LIPresident

Our 2 aldermanic candidates oppose historic CCLBA destruction. Jeanette Taylor promised to not sign demo permit for Washington Park Bank bldg. Johnson: "I absolutely support the community... I consider this yet another bait & switch maneuver to push something down our throats."
Rose: No one came out and said "This building can't be torn down." False. Rob Rose to Woodlawn residents: "WE ARE GOING TO SAVE THIS BUILDING." This before CCLBA engineer report came out saying building "structurally sound, intact, & in good condition."

Rose: Changes "made to all proposals."
WW clarification: construction consultant
Demo Team changes after deadline: building reduced in size 40% (from 5 stories to 3 stories) b/c tiff/tax credits. YWCA loses 3 floors. Discovered & added coworking. Added UChicago (without loi?)
This is a proposal from Woodlawn Works to save and repurpose the Washington Park National Bank Building.
Great organization.
Great plan.
Great use.
Yet, they were NOT chosen by the Cook County Land Bank!!!
See for yourself...

Live from Cook County Land Bank Board meeting regarding the fate of Washington Park National Bank!
At many community meetings, the neighbors clearly said they wanted the building saved, and which uses they prefered.
The Board's prefered plan is NOT what Woodlawn said they want!
Cook County Land Bank overwhelmingly voted to DEMOLISH Washington Park Bank & build new.
Preservation Chicago gave impassioned speeches & we are EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED with this decision.
This is not over yet!
Proposed new building rendering.
Any thoughts to share with @CCLBA
Second presentation is on the Washington Park National Park Bank Building. Respondents are not present. Peter Friedman says board has requested additional info from the RFP. Says response so far has been excellent. Expects to meet in January.
@LIPresident@ajlatrace@CCLBA Yes! Three public meetings and about 25 years waiting for a plan to consider a reuse of the building, only to be let down by the agency formed to assist in a positive redevelopment and reuse plan! This is a tragic outcome for the Washington Park National Bank. Hoped for better!
