It was great to be back at Warwick's in La Jolla this week to moderate a book talk with Pulitzer and Polk Award Winning journalist and investigative reporter Dean Calbreath, the author of "The Sergeant: The Incredible Life of Nicholas Said: Son of an African General, Slave of the Ottomans, Free Man under the Tsars, Hero of the Union Army." A well-researched and riveting story of one man's life journey starting as the son of one of Africa’s greatest warriors, who was taken prisoner by slave traders, and then journeyed to Tripoli, Mecca, Istanbul, Russia, France, England, Canada, the Caribbean, and ended up on the Civil War battlefields of America.  Said was both a witness and participant in historical events.
