It is interesting that the only time the BBC is interested in hearing from us is when they want us to defend our work. I have nothing to contribute to a platform that has not even deemed it fit to announce and celebrate the Caine Prize, but was willing to give a global audience to a journalist who does not even have expertise in African literature.
If they want a conversation, then they should schedule an interview with Simba or with Nzube, the publisher of the story. I am not hungry for this kind of platform, and I honestly have no interest in participating in a conversation where we are invited only to defend our art. We should not have to constantly defend our right to create art before people who have shown little interest in celebrating it.
@Panini500bc Language is actually the edge poetry has over other genres. But I understand that some poems insist on being written with narratives as the priority. However, perhaps, due to my own bias, the beauty of a poem is in the way the language is constructed.
