Barry Jenkins came across “In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue” and was immediately inspired by the main character's story. With McCraney’s blessing, Jenkins was able to convert the story/play into “Moonlight.”

“Moonlight”, the 2016 drama film directed by Barry Jenkins was based on the unpublished play “In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue” by Tarell Alvin McCraney, which tells the story of a young black man coming to terms with his sexuality.
