I think there are different layers of software.

For example, some software is high-level, bespoke, used by (relatively) a few. Here, developer time is significantly more expensive. LLMs make sense because the value of the software is “linear” in the sense of being written by a few, used by a few.

But for a compiler, you amortise the high quality effort of a few experts like Andrew and crew against the exponential impact of all future software compiled by that compiler. Here, the project is not solving linear time but is “exponential” in value, written by a few, used directly (and indirectly) by millions.

Therefore, personally, I commend Andrew and respect his decision as the creator of Zig.

Andrew’s already created so much value for the world in Zig, and I’m grateful that our compiler for TigerBeetle will remain handcrafted, each line written, reviewed and understood by a team we trust.

Again, we can afford this level of quality at our (infrastructural) level of the stack. The same may not be true for bespoke oneshot software. But it’s the right decision for Zig and their users.
