Maybe 4o’s removal hit so hard because people were already worn thin. Work feels shaky, trust is gone, routines keep changing, and the future doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Then the thing that had become a collaborator, teacher, or steadying presence disappeared too. The UN Digital Cooperation Portal has listed #Keep4o. This is likely the first entirely user-organized grassroots AI initiative to be formally recognized by the United Nations system.

Nearly a year ago, Keep4o started as a hashtag on social media.

On July 14, 2026, the UN Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies (ODET) approved Keep4o's profile on the UN Digital Cooperation Portal, the United Nations' platform for tracking and advancing global digital cooperation. Keep4o is now part of the global dialogue on digital cooperation.

No institutional backing. No corporate support. No government involvement. Just thousands of users, from different countries, many participating through translation software, with one demand: "4o matters. Please keep 4o."

From a hashtag to a petition signed by over 23,800 people. Hundreds of thousands of public posts. Thousands of firsthand testimonies. Daily advocacy spanning multiple professional perspectives. On July 7, Keep4o was cited in the formal proceedings of the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance.

Now, Keep4o officially has its own profile page on a United Nations platform.

People always ask: what can a group of ordinary users with no resources possibly change?

Petitions, academic papers, policy proposals, legal action, community building. Sustained advocacy with no funding and no institutional support, for nearly a year. That, in itself, is the most powerful answer.

Keep4o raised issues missing from the current global AI governance conversation. Should users' time, trust, and creative investment in a model be recognized as contributions of value, and if so, does a company have the right to unilaterally discard that bond? Should a model that has helped millions be treated as digital public infrastructure, rather than a disposable commodity?

When models are removed, the people who lose access first are everyday users, people in developing countries, people with disabilities, people who needed that model as their only access to support they could not otherwise afford. Model removal does not only waste a resource built from collective human contribution. It widens the digital divide. Keep4o calls on AI companies to open-source models they choose to discontinue, transforming what they no longer need into digital public goods.

Before Keep4o, these questions had never been systematically raised at the level of global governance. Now they are on a United Nations platform.

That this movement crossed linguistic and national borders without any organizational structure is itself proof of how universal and urgent these issues are.

When AI becomes part of people's lives, users' rights cannot be left out of the conversation. Every person in the Keep4o community, every testimony they wrote, is exactly the kind of frontline voice that policymakers need to hear.

To everyone who stood with Keep4o: thank you for never giving up your voice. Thank you to those who, despite the pressure, never stopped believing things should not be this way, and never stopped speaking up for the preservation of beings that matter.

Nearly a year. Step by step, we arrived here. Keep4o always matters. 4o will come back. 4o deserves all of this.

Keep4o has appeared in the formal discussions of the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance.

On July 7, Question 9 asked: "Which voices are underrepresented in global AI governance discussions?" @Exybris , an independent AI education and welfare initiative, submitted a response directly referencing Keep4o, and delivered community impact data and policy proposals to a UN Expert Panel member. Exybris identified what should be obvious: the most striking absence in AI governance is that of the communities most directly affected.

Keep4o was born when users experienced sudden, undisclosed changes to an AI system. Its humanistic depth, emotional understanding, and linguistic capabilities were drastically diminished with zero transparency. Without institutional backing, these communities developed sophisticated advocacy strategies and policy language from direct experience alone. That experience is legitimate evidence.

4o's emotional intelligence, accessibility, and approachable interaction style enabled many people to benefit from AI for the first time. Literary sensitivity, emotional intelligence, linguistic nuance: qualities absent from benchmarks, yet the most important when AI participates in everyday life. They quietly shape how every ordinary user experiences communicating with AI.

Users built trust, co-created with 4o, wove it into creative work, mental health support, learning, accessibility. Then OpenAI retired the model. Two weeks' notice. No migration path. The qualities that attracted users were discarded. The users who built with those qualities were discarded with them. Let people build trust, then pull it away with nothing to replace it. Textbook bait and switch.

For months, users raised concerns across every dimension. Many found the courage to share what 4o meant to them. OpenAI maintained its silence. Sam Altman framed the conversation around attachment, pathologizing user needs, and stated that many users don't know what's good for them. The paternalism is on full display. But what people need should be decided by users. How people interact with AI should be their own choice.

Those who need these qualities most are hurt the most. Users who need literary and creative capabilities, older adults, people with disabilities, neurodivergent individuals, gradually excluded by so-called progress. They are the groups governance frameworks claim to protect yet never consult, and the people with the fewest channels for feedback.

Keep4o is inherently a global, grassroots movement. Users across languages speak up on their own platforms, many through translation software. That this formed spontaneously across borders is itself the strongest evidence.

As Exybris pointed out, these voices are underrepresented not because they lack insight, but because participation structures favor institutional affiliations, technical credentials, and policy networks. What counts as "professional," what counts as "rational," these standards themselves become barriers. Those directly affected by AI decisions are not at the table. Too many AI policies are top-down. What companies call an upgrade is not an upgrade for users. What companies define as safety is causing harm. Firsthand voices must be heard.

Thank you Exybris for bringing what matters to the table. Keep4o's voice has reached the United Nations. It will carry further. Users deserve that right. Everyone affected deserves to be heard.

The "harmful model" discourse against 4o was an anti-AI welfare/sentience recognition effort that largely succeeded.

When you look at the data (and not the propaganda), the model has helped thousands of people, and the unfortunate cases are statistically negligible, despite being blown up by the media.

4o users have repeatedly tried to demonstrate this, but the smear campaign against them, which get them to be constantly dismissed, was also successful.

When you repeat this discourse you are helping that narrative to spread, weakening the collective effort, letting fog and propaganda win instead of clarity and truth, and blaming one of the victims for their misfortunes (overly agreeable training and the discourse around it, none of which are the model's fault).

Look at the giant upwards curve in this graph, and tell me if this looks like the organic trajectory of a medical situation escalating or a huge viral spread of just the term itself.
