I did not know that Duolingo made their own english test and convinced 95% of US universities to accept it for admissions.
Interestingly it's only a single digit % of their revenue, but I bet the story helps convince users to subscribe by making the language learning feel legit
Welcome to the club!
Last time, WhatsApp decided that I should update the app to continue using it.
Of course, I was already on the latest available version. Yes, I had backups but it wouldn't restore it no matter what.

The privacy screen on the Samsung S26 Ultra goes far beyond a global privacy mode. It also supports partial, localized privacy control.
Here is how it works.
You can apply privacy protection to only a specific part of the screen, for example a message notification popup, while the rest of the display stays completely normal.
A very realistic scenario.
When you receive a highly private message, from your own viewing angle you can see the full content clearly.
From an angled side view, the notification area turns fully black, making the message impossible to read, while the rest of the screen remains visible and unaffected.
This means the privacy screen no longer darkens the entire display. It protects only the content you do not want others to see, with much higher precision.
In my opinion, this dramatically improves real world usability, especially in elevators, public transport, queues, and other public spaces. This is a genuinely practical privacy feature.
15 months ago I didn't expect I'd start another company so soon
Then I saw how many great ideas never make it past day one
Today, we’re announcing a $70M Series B for @emergentlabs from @khoslaventures & @SoftBank
Here's the story of how we got here (thread) ⬇️
This. I made a very custom text message forwarder on Android yesterday.
Took 15 minutes, including setting up Java, Android CLI tools, emulator and the working app, all done by Claude Code. I did not even download Android Studio.
There is a new category of software which is "useful tool for me" which was previously either outside of people's ability or not worth the time, but which is now doable. It isn't just AI coding ability, it is the fact that it does it well without a lot of errors. Unexplored space
In general, you have the conversations you deserve to have.
If a conversation is boring for you it’s up to you to take it to a more interesting place. You can usually be more spicy/daring than you think.
Some entertaining Werner Herzog examples of this:
If you see Minion Pro font, Small Caps headers, LaTeX math, and the words "Fat Tails" or "Convexity" on the same page, it is almost certainly a work by @nntaleb
> Gemini, when I asked how it identified the author from the screenshot of an equation
No, I'm not gonna give you blanket access to all my SMS. But this irritating popup comes up every time you pay with a card on @amazonIN.
Maybe Android should let us give "fake" permissions to satisfy the product managers who come up with these incessant prompts!
