I had a productive meeting with Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi yesterday.
Somaliland has already established itself as a reliable partner for the United States on a range of issues, from countering terrorism to protecting shipping around the Horn of Africa. We discussed further strengthening the U.S.-Somaliland partnership.
I have been pushing the United States to deepen our partnership. I am committed to securing American recognition of Somaliland’s sovereignty and, in the meantime, I’m urging the State Department to stop treating Somaliland as the same as Somalia. The U.S. should establish a region-specific Travel Advisory specifically for Somaliland, which would reflect the reality on the ground.
I look forward to continuing our work to advance our shared security interests.
@SenTedCruz, a long-time friend of the Republic of Somaliland, has received President Abdirahman Mohamed "Irro" in Washington. The meeting reflects a friendship that has grown steadily stronger.
As Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health Policy, Senator Cruz wrote to President Trump describing Somaliland as a critical security and diplomatic partner and urging the administration to grant it recognition. His letter described Somaliland as a stable, self-governing, democratic nation and pointed to its peaceful elections and its willingness to host a U.S. military presence near the Red Sea.
He has kept up that support. In June 2025, he said a serious conversation about U.S. recognition of Somaliland is necessary and long overdue. At a Senate hearing in December 2025, he called Somaliland a critical U.S. maritime security partner, citing its contribution to counterterrorism and anti-piracy missions along the Gulf of Aden. In April 2026, he voiced confidence that President Trump will recognize Somaliland before the end of his term.
The people and government of Somaliland thank Senator Cruz for his principled leadership, his courage, and his steadfast friendship. We look forward to deepening our partnership with the United States on security, trade, and shared democratic values.
I guess I’m not alone.
The U.S. should recognize #Somaliland.
A stable democracy on the Horn of Africa is in our best interest and of the region.

In my 30 years in this line of work, I never posted a picture with heads of state or celebrity politicians, but for Somaliland, I’ll make an exception.
The sixth president of the Republic of Somaliland Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi is visiting Washington, asking for recognition of his nation’s self-determination, independence and sovereignty.
Even though neighboring Somalia receives billions of dollars in foreign aid, Somaliland that cannot access such money until it is recognized as a state has a GDP per capita that’s 30 percent higher than Somalia.
Somaliland is stable and democratic. Somalia is a mess.
#Boos hore oo aan ka shaqayn jiray ayaa inankii loo qaatay saaka isoo wacay, wuxuuna igu yidhi: 'Arrintan noocaas ah ma iga caawin kartaa?' Waxaan ku idhi: 'Waxba hays dhibin! Wixii kaa khaldama, Xareed baa arrintan kharribay dheh.' Soo jawaab sax ah ma siin?
Hadalkan #Caddaani waa “offside”; looguma talagelin warbaahinta. Wuxuu si aan ku talo gal ahayn u dhaafay kooxda Protocol-ka. Nin oday ah ayaa hore iigu sheegay inaan caddaani oo kale aan system-ka laga ogolayn.
In Jerusalem, President Irro presented Somaliland’s investment story to leading Israeli companies, global investors, and business leaders. With its strategic location, stability, and untapped potential across key sectors, Somaliland is positioning itself as a gateway for trade, investment, and innovation in the Horn of Africa.
Partnerships are built through dialogue. Prosperity is built through investment.
Bismillahi Rahmani Rahiim;
I have arrived in Israel as the first President of the Republic of Somaliland to undertake a State Visit, and I am honoured by the warm welcome extended by my friend, President @Isaac_Herzog
For thirty-five years, the people of Somaliland have built a peaceful, democratic, and resilient nation. We asked the world: Do you see us? Israel answered first. Today marks a historic milestone in our journey and the beginning of a new chapter in the relationship between Somaliland and Israel.
To the people of Somaliland: I carry your hopes and aspirations with me. Generations have struggled, sacrificed, and persevered to bring our nation to this moment. We will seize this opportunity with confidence, wisdom, and determination, always guided by the interests of our people and our Republic.
Today, history is being written, and Somaliland stands ready to forge a shared future founded on friendship, cooperation, and mutual respect.

Somaliland President is set to visit Israel and the United States for high-level talks on bilateral ties, marking a significant diplomatic milestone. Visit aims to strengthen strategic partnerships and elevate Somaliland’s position at the center of regional and global cooperation
Mogadishu's favourite talking point is that Somaliland is Isaq dominated and a single clan cannot become a nation-state.
Reality is that Somaliland is a multi-clan state and has historically done more to become more inclusive than any Somali polity in the Horn.
The Isaq are the dominant clan because of demography not because they 'own' the state.
The Isaq were the central force that drove Somaliland's war of liberation, helped reclaim its independence and contributed to its state-building.
Those who demonise the Isaq conveniently forget the clan's contribution to build a democratic state, inclusive and pluralistic society.
The notion Somaliland is single clan aristocracy is a caricature
Dahir Riyale Kahin (Somaliland's 3rd President) was a Gadabursi from Awdal and not an Isaq.
If it did that when it was a young democracy it surely could do the same now.
Look at every Somali polity and show me one single Somali state whose early state building was not driven by a 'central clan' with demographic weight, military muscle, ability to out-coerce and exert control.
The beauty of Somaliland is that it is on the right path towards becoming a strong constitutional democracy one which prioritises and privileges citizenship over clan.
Ask Balcad and Mogadishu if a Hamari, a Jareer/Bantu Somali can become president.
Zero chance. 😇
