I get alot of questions from car twitter in regard to what owning a small bird like the Cessna 182 Skylane would entail and i will try to offer insights on that in this article.

Aircraft background.
The Cessna 182 was introduced in the 1960s as a bigger option to the popular Cessna 172 (which is the worlds best selling aircraft)
Target market for the 182 is mainly private pilots or light charter operations.

The pictured 1975 182R is offered with a 230HP engine & variable 3 blade prop (more powerful fuel injected variants are also available).
The variable prop functions as a manual gearbox allowing very high rpms during take offs (Fine pitch) & a more relaxed vibe during cruise (Coarse setting).
182 can operate from grass, gravel & tarmac runways with a minimum length of atleast 600 Metres.
Ceiling altitude is around 18,000 feet and it cruises at approx 220Kph per hour (meaning a trip to Mombasa would take 1 Hour 50 mins assuming zero winds)
Extremely stable aircraft and the’re capable enough to fly through challenging weather if equipped with the right extras ( weather radar , moving maps , autopilots etc etc)

OWNERSHIP COSTS

A. Fuel , miscellaneous & Insurance

The 182 burns around 50 Litres of avgas per hour.
Avgas retails at Kes 300 and that translates to Kes 15K of fuel burnt per hour flown(enough to cover 180kms-200kms).
Other costs to factor including landing charges (approx kes 500 per landing) Navigation charges (approx kes 2,000 per hour), parking (approx kes 1,100 per day for a busy airport like Wilson).
Annual insurance is charged at 4.5% aircraft value which translates to around 1M annually for a plane valued at USD 170,000

B. Maintenance & service cost

After 50 flight hours a minor service (check A) will cost you kes 200K (Oil , Oil filter & labour). Then after another 50 flight hours, a 100 hour “Check B” is done which entails going deeper and ensuring aircraft controls plus engine compressions are within approved limits, this will cost Kes 250K
( The two checks will always alternate, so after a check 1, you can always expect a check 2 during your next service)

Every year you will also factor around Kes 400K for Certificate of airworthiness inspection & preparation (This is a strict government requirement and KCAA guys will do the inspection so everything must be within limits)

Lastly but not least, Check 3.
This is the baba yao of aircraft maintenance.
Its done after 12 calendar years or 2,200 flight hours (whichever comes first)
During check “C” , the entire aircraft structure is dismantled , paint stripped down , engine opened up and all major components undergo serious overhauls.
On a Cessna 182, this will cost you Kes 7M but basically gives the plane a new lease of life ( smart owners will typically set aside some savings for every hour flown as overhaul/engine reserves)

C. Pilots
It will cost you around USD 3,000 per month to retain a Cessna 182 pilot.
Alternatively, you could spend USD 10,000 on a private pilots license and fly it yourself.

Such strict maintenace standards are the reason why you will see 50 year old planes still flying.
