Brilliant essay! Can relate to the part about feeling physically sick when your portfolio takes a hammering. The way I deal with it, I say to myself, well not many people around me can say they just lost (insert the number 10k, 100k, 1m) in a week / you can’t be a high roller if you don’t take a few bad beats every now and again. Gut wrenching. Love the part about insurance. Will investigate
@griptmedia Aontu may be right wing on social issues but it’s highly left wing on economic issues, unfortunately. Cannot call it a right wing party. Unvotable.
Communism never works. We’re already spending €11.8bn on housing subsidies that distort the market and are easily gamed. Government should get smaller: free up land, fix our antiquated planning system, and return the savings to workers through lower income tax and USC, plus better deposit-saving incentives to save for deposits. Put money in people’s pockets—not into propping up house prices.
Housing subsidies of €11.8bn distort the market and are easily gamed. Gov. should focus on freeing up land, fixing planning, and redirect that money into tax cuts for hard-working people plus better saving schemes for deposits.
Assuming ~€11.8bn is roughly one-third of the income tax take, split it 40/40/20:
• ~€4.7bn could cut the 20% rate by ~4–4.5 points (towards ~15.5–16%)
• ~€4.7bn could cut the 40% rate by ~8 points (towards ~32%)
• ~€2.4bn could meaningfully lower USC rates across the bands.
That puts more money directly in workers’ pockets to save and invest instead of propping up prices.
@NewstalkFM He’s the president of the country where the HQ of the largest taxpaying companies in Ireland are all based . @NewstalkFM has really gone to the dogs recently. RTE 3
Thanks @Nick_Delehanty for highlighting this and many other issues facing Ireland! Subsidy after subsidy , hand out after hand out, without fixing the root causes! Gov job is to enforce fair regulations and standards and then get out of the way. The world has tried communism and socialism and it has never worked!
Hugo Chávez opens Venezuela’s new “Socialist Supermarkets”.
These were also presented as a compassionate response to try lower food prices.
Timeline:
2003: Food prices controlled
2007: Food Shortages spread
2010: All Supermarkets nationalised & occupied
2011: Govt. determine“fair” profits
2014: Profit margins capped at 30%
2015: Fingerprint scanners introduced
Now Mamdani is going down this road in New York and Irish leftists want to follow suit.
Tax Private businesses to raise funds.
Call the subsidy "competition".
Once things start going tits up, blame capitalism.
The lesson is that every failed State intervention becomes the justification for another intervention.
We already see this in Irish housing with rent controls, HAP, AHBs, IPAS, the DRHE etc, all requiring further intervention to address problems the State has failed to solve..... all the while blaming capitalism.
How can anyone think the State can run a cheeper supermarket than Aldi or Lidl? These companies are ruthlessly efficient creatures of capitalism.
If Govt really wants to make food cheaper, they would
reduce the cost of energy, employment, transport etc.
This is not hard.
@Keyes@joehas Just look at what Norway did with their sovereign wealth fund .. as per McWilliams latest article. The only tax efficient thing in Ireland is to maximize your pension. We prefer handouts to enabling people to grow wealth. https://t.co/VHpmMmIfnM
@garrethmcdaid In general the expansion is warranted as most teams can compete. Would be interesting to see stats on that, clearly there are more competive teams now than in previous eras?
@RobertJBye It was terrible today. Barely linked at all to my desktop co-work , it has the projects there but it way overthinks everything. Difficult to use while I was travelling which is the whole point. Need it much closer to co-work
@padspoker So what you are saying is you need to keep your poker face until literally the dealer moves the chips towards you… a bit of an angle opp otherwise.. sneaky
