@girlziplocked A lot of large cities (including LA) don't provide school buses except in special circumstances. So if your kid isn't old enough to take the public bus and it's too far to walk/bike, it's your only option
@Russ_Agdern@JewishWonk After having kids and in light of the RA's teshuva on kitniyot in 2015 we started eating it last year and I highly recommend it
@JakeBofBvdSG @politicalmath The census count includes children and non-citizens. I'm not claiming to know the precise reason for the magnitude and sign of the discontinuity, just the reason for the existence of a discontinuity. OP alleges a vast conspiracy with no evidence of an actual conspiracy.
@HannahLebovits I agree with you although I have to say, as a member of a egalitarian shul in LA that’s exactly where you’d expect to see vision boards et al, I’ve never seen anyone do this at the high holidays
@mindyisser My eldest daughter's most insane meltdown (age 2) was when her toy necklace slid under our bed out of her reach, and she was shouting "NECKLACE!" for about 15 solid minutes before we realized what had happened
@christapeterso What you don't get, because you, quote, "don't give a shit" about Jews' own self-definition, is that Ashkenazi refers to a liturgical rite and set of customs, not an "ethnic group" which wasn't really a concept familiar to them at the time. It absolutely still exists as such.
@christapeterso Believe whatever you want about Zionism’s use of these beliefs in its messaging, but you’re embarrassing yourself by condescending to Jews like this without understanding or giving a shit about our actual beliefs.
@christapeterso But Jews *do* give a shit. That we’re directly continuous with the ancient Israelites is about as important to Judaism as “Jesus died for our sins” is to Christianity. You can’t post this and expect to not piss off a bunch of Jews.
@LindseyPHorvath There cannot possibly be a serious need for the entire LA county Board of Supervisors to travel to Paris to “observe the Olympics.” If you’re going to blow our tax money on this, at least have the decency not to publicly taunt us with it.
@daniela127 Anyone with one Jewish grandparent is eligible for the right of return, so he does, and their declaration here is clearly immaterial to that if he later decided to exercise it.
@HannahLebovits I think it's ok if some people come to shul primarily to schmooze and aren't that interested in davening. We should support that and make sure they have to space to do it where it doesn't distract people who are very keen to focus on davening (which is also good).
@HannahLebovits Good: community of regulars, post-service kiddush and dinner/lunch (or way to match people for hosting/guesting), participatory singing, way to sonically separate schmoozers from daveners (both are important!)
Bad: excessive sermonizing re: both length and politics
