Forestry investments in Mozambique's miombo region reveal complex effects on local livelihoods. This highlights the urgent need to rethink incentives, address land tenancy issues, and foster equitable growth.
Are forestry plantations truly a win-win for both environmental and social goals? 🤔 Our latest study looks at the impacts of large-scale forestry investments on small-scale agriculture in Mozambique:
https://t.co/9l0U4fj1hf
Our findings show that exposure to forestry plantations increases farm sizes but reduces crop yields. While some households shift to non-farm employment, the expected boost in agricultural jobs isn’t realized.
Working on deforestation and its impacts? Here is a paper proposing a new theory of deforestation frontier emergence, led by Patrick Meyfroidt. Nice collaboration between the #MIDLAND and #SYSTEMSHIFT teams 👉https://t.co/d5At52jV8n @ERC_Research@BiogeoBerlin
This has been an incredible effort over several years, masterfully led by Patrick Meyfroidt @PMeyfroidt 🙏
Massive thanks to him for synthesizing the different pieces and to all the amazing collaborators.
It's been a true honor to be part of this fantastic team!
🌿🌍 Excited to share the publication of our synthesis paper from the MIDLAND project, where I contributed during my postdoc fellowship. This research explains the emergence of land-use frontiers and their significant impact on sustainability.

Wondering how medium-scale farms compare to small and large ones for rural development, and what advantages they may provide? Check out our blog post with @PMeyfroidt on medium-scale farming in Mozambique

@PMeyfroidt @andreamyrte Thanks! Indeed, larger farms are typically under-represented in these household surveys, which makes the confidence interval wider. There are also many possible factors behind: crop types, dominance of small/large-scale holdings, etc; but a detailed look goes beyond this paper
Large-scale or smallholder farming: Which is best at achieving the goals of food production, conservation and higher farmer incomes?
