Most people just needed gas or a Red Bull or something they didn't want to admit buying at a normal hour.
But some nights were different.
One Tuesday around 3am, a man in a tuxedo came in holding one shoe.
Me: Long night?
Him: Medium night with a long ending.
He bought a hot dog, a Gatorade, and a road atlas, which we still inexplicably stocked.
Then he sat on the curb outside and ate quietly.
I watched through the window for a few minutes.
When he came back to throw away his wrapper:
Me: You okay to drive?
Him: I walked here.
Me: From where?
Him: The Marriott. Four miles.
Me: Why?
Him: Needed to think and hotels make you feel like you're supposed to figure things out in one room.
Me: What happened?
Him: Nothing dramatic. I just got to the reception and realized I didn't want to be the person I'd been for the last six years.
Me: At your own wedding?
Him: (pause) Friend's wedding. I was a groomsman.
I handed him a cup of coffee I'd just made. He hadn't asked but he looked like a man four miles from a decision.
Him: The groom's a good guy. I just kept watching him and thinking, I've been playing it safe so long I forgot what I was being safe for.
Me: What are you going to do?
Him: I applied for something last month. Different city. Long shot.
Me: And?
Him: They emailed me at 11pm tonight. I got it.
He pulled out his phone. Showed me without me asking.
Me: So why the long walk?
Him: Because yes felt scary and I needed to be somewhere normal before I said it out loud.
Me: Gas station at 3am is normal to you?
Him: It's honest. Nobody's pretending in here.
He finished the coffee. Called a cab.
Before he left he put ten dollars on the counter for the coffee that cost me nothing.
Him: Keep it.
Me: You walked four miles in one shoe. You need it more.
Him: I got the job. I'll be fine.
He got in the cab and left.
I never saw him again.
But sometimes at 3am when the highway is empty and the fluorescents are buzzing and someone walks in carrying something heavier than what's in their hands, I think about the guy in the tuxedo.

The boat hadn't moved in three years but the man living on it kept the running lights on every night.
I know because my apartment faces the marina and my insomnia faces the window.
He was out there most evenings. Older guy. Reading, mostly. Sometimes just sitting.
I started noticing patterns the way you do when you can't sleep and the alternative is looking at your phone.
He took his coffee at the same time every morning. Always checked the lines, even though the boat never went anywhere. Always left the lights on when he went below.
My neighbor saw me watching once.
Neighbor: That's Mitch.
Me: You know him?
Neighbor: My dad used to dock here. Mitch has been on that boat since his wife passed.
Me: When was that?
Neighbor: Three years ago. Boat was supposed to be their retirement plan.
I thought about that every time I saw the lights.
One Saturday I was down at the marina fixing a scratch on my kayak and he was coiling rope on the deck.
Me: Nice boat.
Him: She was.
Me: You take her out much?
Him: Not anymore.
I didn't push it. We talked about nothing for a few minutes. Weather, the new restaurant on the waterfront, whether the marina was getting too expensive.
Then he said:
Him: My wife picked out every detail on this boat. Down to the color of the cushions.
Me: What color?
Him: She called it sea glass. I called it green.
He smiled a little.
Him: She said I had no eye for color. She was correct.
Me: You keep the lights on at night.
He looked at me.
Me: I can see from my building.
Him: (nodded slowly) She was scared of dark water. Didn't matter that we were docked. She liked being able to see where we were.
He went back to the rope.
Him: Habit, I suppose.
I went back to my kayak.
That was two months ago.
Last week I saw a marina worker helping him run through some kind of system check. Engine running for the first time, sounded like. Water coming out the back.
I watched from the window.
He didn't take her out. Just let her run for a while.
But this morning the cover was off the cockpit.
And there were two coffee cups on the deck table.
I don't know who the second one was for.
But the lights were still on.
