When this war ends, I hope my dreams can be my reality—The dream of seeing Gaza from sky on plane, of riding my bike with kids without stopping at the border, of diving deep in the sea without being fired at by a gunboat, the dream that this land can be safe to grow more dreams.
Brian Cox reads If I Must Die, by beloved Palestinian poet, teacher and martyr Refaat Alareer.
Refaat was killed on December 7th by an Israeli airstrike.
This was the last poem he published.
“If I must die / let it bring hope / let it be a tale”
— Refaat Alareer
Palestinian poet Refaat Alareer was killed alongside several family members by an Israeli air strike in Gaza. I don't have words for this loss.
Such a heartbreaking last post by journalist Ola Atallah, who got killed yesterday in her house. Ola wrote:
How many nights of terror and death should Gaza be prepared for? How many hours of hunger & thirst & coldness & sickness & displacement & alienation? How many will left us?
86 years after the sirens sounded for the Nazi genocide, the Spanish city of Gernika once again sounds the sirens in response to the Israeli genocide in Gaza.
I don’t use buzzwords casually as I find that they often obscure more than they reveal, but this is so comically orientalist it’s embarrassing. You don’t need “cultural ties to the Arab world” to know that destroying people’s homes & forcibly stripping them naked is humiliating.
"I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops."
- Stephen Jay Gould
@blkpaws i gave my best in translating this poem into korean…🇰🇷 may he rest in peace and his story never forgotten.
부족하지만 최선을 다해 레파트 알라리어 교수님의 시를 한국어로도 번역해 보았습니다
Came across Dr. Refaat Alareer's poem "If I must die" just a few days ago, I cried and couldn't help but translated it to Chinese without his permission. Now that he's gone.
