Witnesses in Gaza described to The Guardian the terrifying moments before an Israeli drone struck 15-year-old Mohammad Abdul Zinati as he rushed to help a wounded paramedic lying in the street.

Mohammad’s cousin said he saw the child running toward the injured man and shouted for him to stop. Then he spotted the drone and screamed, “Run! Get away!” Seconds later, the drone struck Mohammad as he reached the wounded man, killing him almost instantly.

Another witness said they found the paramedic, Sharif Shadi Labad, alive and calling for help after the initial strike. Mohammad was among several civilians who approached him.

The Guardian verified footage of the attack, while weapons expert Trevor Ball said the drone’s high-quality camera would likely have been capable of seeing the child and the wounded man. The strike appears to fit the pattern known as a “double-tap” attack, in which a second strike hits the same location after rescuers or bystanders arrive.

I took this photo moments ago on one of the streets of Gaza. Perhaps it alone captures the scale of the tragedy we are living through here.

For more than three years, no reconstruction or building materials have entered Gaza City. So what people are doing today is an extraordinary act of resilience in the face of the impossible. They go to destroyed buildings and, among the rubble and twisted metal, use their bare hands and very basic tools to remove the stones trapped in the metal.

After that, they collect the steel rods, straighten and prepare them, and then use them to build tents and temporary shelters.

This work is incredibly difficult, exhausting, and extremely dangerous. People here are not doing this for comfort or to improve their lives. They are doing it because they have no other choice.
