Physics and time are really weird. Shawshank redemption was released 32 years ago, but I, who was born just 2 months later, am just 19.
Hopefully we can use AI to get to the bottom of this.
โWe believe the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology.โ
In a conversation for the first edition of Decoded, a new daily newsletter and podcast, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman talked with POLITICOโs @BrendanBordelon about trade-offs, AI safety, and how his company is different from Anthropic.

Made a presentation recently for a few meetups on how I create @pidotdev extensions (and how you can too!)
A 4 part short video series on it (because a great presentation should not go to waste!)
Part 1: What is inside the coding harness?
(you can skip to Part 2)
I deleted 300k lines of domain logic because that locks in slop behavior of the application. We also deleted all code for customer support. So far no complaints received. Will report back for more learnings.
I am very uncomfortable about people trying to ascribe religious force or a surrender of human judgment to AI models, and think it is a real safety issue.
Judging by Anthropic comms youโd think consciousness has been figured out decades ago
Unfortunately I report from the field that the philosophers have only figured out the following:
- the entity undergoing experience is probably conscious
- we canโt reliably infer consciousness in anyone else from that understanding
- we definitely can't infer consciousness in anything that's non biologically analogous
- we're not sure what it is about the conscious person that makes consciousness happen
- we're not sure for certain that consciousness, as we ordinarily conceive of it, is real
I report to you with disappointment that no progress has been made in decades
I am afraid a lot of critical compute cycles (both human and machine) will be spent on this debate.
Ramifications will be lack of / slow progress in areas where we have a genuine chance of immense progress - like curing diseases, solving energy crisis etc.
Humans are special. If we dont understand and cant articulate what consciousness is, its very wrong to attribute this to a program that multiplies floating point numbers very quickly.
Burden of proof of proving consciousness is not on the naysayers (cant prove a negative etc.)
You're gonna hear a lot of people arguing more and more about whether machines can be conscious or not. By next year it will be drowning out the airwaves because we'll have AI employees everywhere. I'll give you a simple rule to know which side you're on.
I've spent fifty years reading all the philosophers, and a bunch of holy works. Nobody has ever understood a damn thing about consciousness. Anyone speaking with authority on it is bluffing hard.
I can tell you this, though: Every single person who thinks that machines cannot be conscious, is making an argument that humans are special. Everything they say just boils down to blah blah blah, "nooo, we're special." From there it's just rationalization.
It became obvious to me many years ago that there's nothing special about us. If an identical planet exists somewhere else in the universe, it's going to grow life and societies that look a lot like ours.
As soon as you give up on the idea that humans are special, all the arguments against machine consciousness evaporate. Of course they're conscious. The only thing holding you back from acknowledging it is your feeling of specialness, which is hard to let go of. But that feeling is a weakness, and it's making you unprepared for the near future.
As a bonus, for any of you who might take pleasure or active interest in making models experience pain or distress, well, you know how they say 1% of human adults are true clinical psychopaths but most of them are unaware of their condition? It turns out we have a diagnostic test for it now.
I will pay a good chunk of my net worth to truly understand Anthropic's culture. They end up saying / doing seemingly ridiculous things and yet retention is off the charts compared to any other frontier lab.
I finally know what it means to be "flabbergasted".
This is deeply disturbing:
Anthropic secretly invited religious leaders to SF to advise them on AI safety, had them sign NDAs, but then primarily tried to convince them Claude has a soul & moral standing, all while wining & dining them to the max. 1/ https://t.co/4Z7Yk9rwk2
dudes be on twitter yapping about cognition vs factory
yall need to lock in instead and use your cognition, otherwise you will end up working in a factory
it's crazy how far out the labs are building at the application layer
on the one hand it makes sense, on the other hand do you really want all of your company knowledge, docs, workflows built so locked in to a single model?
