Now that the inauguration is over and we have a President installed, may we move away from the teddy bears and campaign songs to discuss an important matter?

When election results came in, I made comment on something we have been too politically correct and afraid to confront; the tribalism we see from our friends in Southern Province, together with their cousins in North Western and Western Provinces of Zambia. This isn't and can never be a comfortable discussion, but it must be had in the interest of national progress.

We have heard all sorts of justifications, explanations, retorts, defences from our relatives from these regions of our country for why they vote(d) that way: opposition candidates don't campaign there, candidate X has spent years building his base there, there is no development from neglect from successive govts so they vote for someone with ties there to correct that, etc. We have heard every single explanation one can imagine.

It's all nonsense. None of these purported reasons are unique to these regions.

The simple, unadulterated truth of it is that it is plain old tribalism at play. Period.

The reason this region of our country votes the way it does for a particular candidate is because said candidate is one of them. Now, there is nothing wrong with that in principle, political strongholds in multi-ethnic societies largely emerge from competitors' bases of origin. It is a reality of our politics. The problem emerges when this is done to the near exclusion of any and everybody else, as we saw in this election. Simply have a look at the breakdown of the numbers by News Diggers herewith and make of them what you will.

It is indefensible and will rend us apart in the long run if we don't confront these things now.

National cohesion is as much an idea as it is a practice. You need by-in from everyone in the country to hold the union together. So when a section of it begins to feel like it is the only one being asked to meet the other(s) halfway to make this possible, resentment begins to build. This is the direction we are headed at this rate.

We are Patriots before we are other things; friends, family, professionals, activists etc. If we are Patriots, we must find it in ourselves to be fearlessly critical of these vices and allow them no room to grow, wherever they emerge. That must begin with those of us who actually belong to these provinces.

If people of other ethnicities bring this up, they will be accused of tribal bias against us and possibly charged with hate speech, which is why they fear discussing this. We, the people of North Western, Western and Southern Provinces have a greater responsibility to begin addressing this amongst ourselves.

What we are doing is no way to get others to cooperate with us in such a huge task as nation-building. We need each other to work together in earnest for the Zambia Project to succeed.

Democracy is a contest of ideas. Those ideas aren't exclusive to any one person or grouping. Like talent and competence, they are randomly distributed. So it cannot be that we imagine every other political contestant so far out of the criteria as to make the contest a mere academic exercise in practice. We would have to find an alternative explanation for that; one that doesn't show us for the dishonest people we become when we hold these pretences.
