From Twitter to DOGE: Elon's Playbook for Transformation
Trump 2.0's agenda is to cut bloat and boost efficiency.
The new Department of Government Efficiency will use Musk’s playbook to overhaul federal agencies.
Is this the start of a governance reboot? Here’s the story..
Founded in 2014 by President Obama, the U.S. Digital Service (USDS) was meant to bring Silicon Valley talent into government.
Its mission?
- Fix broken federal digital initiatives (like HHS website)
- Modernize government IT
- Streamline how agencies buy digital services
It made progress- improving SSA website, digitizing VA benefits & IRS tax filing tools etc. But it never fundamentally changed how the government operated.
Now, under Trump’s executive order, it’s being rebranded and repurposed as US DOGE Service.
Here's what's changed:
Full digital access – Agencies must open unclassified systems for review.
Cutting redundant spending – No more bloated IT contracts.
Fixing slow government services – Automation and tech-first processes.
DOGE will be applying Musk’s 5-step algorithm for busting bureaucracy:
1 Question every rule
2 Delete unnecessary steps
3 Simplify before optimizing
4 Accelerate decision-making
5 Automate what’s left
Each federal agency must now form a lean 4-person "DOGE Team" to enforce these principles.
Originally, it was reported that DOGE will be an external advisory body to audit waste. Instead, it’s now an official federal office—inside the White House. This gives it teeth to enact real change.
USDS was limited to fixing projects when agencies asked for help. DOGE forces every agency to modernize, whether they want to or not.
Twitter survived a 80% workforce cut. Imagine what happens when the same model is applied to Washington.
Some say this will gut government. Others say it will finally force efficiency.
Either way—DOGE is here.
And it’s just getting started.
I came across Facebook's beautiful employee handbook by Ben Barry for the first time today.
And I think every employee and founder needs to see it.
Even Zuckerberg-haters will probably be impressed.
A sneak peek into 15 pages of the Facebook Employee Handbook:
@gregisenberg@latecheckoutplz@boringmarketer @DispatchDesign ...yeah culture is underpinned by organizational arefacts, most of which have stories...only logical to have it in the employee handbook! nice find greg - thanks for the thread!
btw, do you have a community or only thru BoringMkt etc?
