Interesting! 👀
No VAR check for a potential penalty for Al Ahly in that moment – could’ve changed the game.
Sometimes these fine margins make all the difference in CAF matches.

In the CAF Champions League first leg between Esperance and Al Ahly, the Senegalese referee, Issa Sy, seems to have violated the Laws of the Game by threatening players with a red card after the match! 🟥🇸🇳
Under Law 12 – Fouls and Misconduct, cards are used to communicate a sanction for misconduct.
The law states that the referee shows the card when a disciplinary sanction is applied.
Cards are not meant for threatening players. They are intended to:
— Clearly signal a decision
— Make the sanction visible to players, officials, spectators, and in the match report.
Referees are allowed to:
— Verbally warn players
— Manage behaviour through communication
— Delay showing the card briefly while controlling a situation.
However, pulling out a red card just to scare players without actually issuing it is not the intended use under IFAB guidance and he might be sanctioned for it.
Why was Senegalese Referee Issa Sy holding a red card in his hand during the #CAFCL game between @ESTunis1919 and @AlAhly, at Rades in Tunis, when no red card offence had been committed? For how long will @CAF_Online allow shambolic officiating to continue?
