Speaking in Frankfurt at an event hosted by Deutsche Börse, Merz argued that Europe can no longer afford sentimentality about the transatlantic relationship. He said the old assumptions about the United States as Europe’s reliable backstop no longer hold, and that “nostalgia and memories of better times” will not help Europe navigate what comes next.

Merz’s message was practical: Europe should become more sovereign and less dependent, especially in technology. In parallel remarks in late January, he also pushed for strengthening Europe’s role inside NATO and framed a more self confident Europe as essential to defending a rules based order.
