Those equivocating about this quote miss Chesterton’s point: if two people have a disagreement about the fundamental nature of the universe, then at least one of them must be wrong. If you quibble about nuances of the example he used, that’s like dismissing St. Thomas Aquinas’s arguments because he used now-outdated Aristotelian examples of physics to illustrate his ideas. St. Thomas explicitly acknowledged that his physics-based illustrations might someday be trumped by superior theories. He wasn’t trying to argue via physics, but rather using currently accepted physical analogs to help people understand the metaphysical arguments that he was making. Similarly, Chesterton’s quote is meant to provide a witty and memorable image that will help people to understand the underlying profound point that he is making.

@stclairashley Where is a link to this government report so that I can find out, first hand, just how bad - or perhaps, benign, it is? The initial post may be true, but maybe not. I'm not aware of any evidence that this government report actually exists.
