in the interview, xu ruohan talked about the days after wrapping up filming in a very casual tone. after finishing a crying scene, she would sit in place, dazed for a long time, tears falling uncontrollably. “at that moment, it felt like the character and i shared those few months of sorrow or joy”

then the filming crew dispersed, and she forced herself back into reality: waking up early to work out, buying bread, getting a manicure, cutting her hair, and using a pile of trivial matters to pull ‘xu ruohan’ back piece by piece

she said she belongs to the kind of person who ‘escapes, it’s shameful but useful’ but when talking about the characters, she doesn’t seem to be escaping.

she remembers how wen dingyi shook her head, she remembers the small knife mu xiaoshu was toying with in her hand, she remembers that ye pingjun lived in the republic of china era—an era of undeveloped communication and difficult meetings—where once they made up their minds, they would never be separated for a lifetime.

these details are kept by her, like her unique ‘little emotional blocks’, stored in her heart, to be unwrapped when needed.
