Twenty-nine medical schools rejected Elizabeth Blackwell. The thirtieth admitted her as a prank.

The faculty at Geneva did not want her either, so they put it to the 150 male students and promised to abide by the vote. The men thought the whole thing was a joke and voted yes. She kept the acceptance letter for the rest of her life.

She arrived to find the joke was on her. Professors made her sit apart from the class, she was barred from anatomy demonstrations and had to argue her way in, and the town decided she was a bad woman for stepping outside what a woman was for. People would not speak to her in the street.

She had been told repeatedly by doctors she knew that it was impossible for a woman, and by a few that she should try disguising herself as a man.

Her own line about it is worth keeping. She wrote that winning a doctor's degree had taken on the shape of a great moral struggle, and that the fight itself attracted her enormously.

She graduated in January 1849 at the top of her class. Some years later an infection picked up while treating an infant cost her the sight in one eye and ended any hope of becoming a surgeon.

So she opened a hospital staffed entirely by women instead, and then a medical college to produce more of them. Twenty-nine schools had told her no, and she went and built the thirtieth.
