Throwback to when my team and I worked on a sportsbook design project.
At the beginning, the client mentioned that we could use downloaded assets if needed. It would have been the faster route, but we suggested and eventually decided against it.
We wanted the whole experience to feel original, so we created every visual element from scratch, including the 2.5D vector illustrations.
To the client, it felt like extra work. Creating custom illustrations for assets we could easily download will just chew up an extra chunk of time, he said.
But later in the design process, we got to a point where we needed to tailor those assets for a rewards campaign section using the same visual style.
And that’s when the decision really paid off.
Because everything was already built from the ground up, adapting the illustrations and tweaking them for this new use case was less of a task.
Sometimes, clients don't really know what they want, so when they see someone willing to think from their POV and brainstorm with them, they appreciate it a whole lot.
1. You needed his reference.
2. Without his reference the result would have been so ass.
3. Even with the reference, The result is still 'ass'
4. This is also impressive either way.
