In the June quarter of 1972 Australia completed more free standing houses than it did in the December quarter of 2025, 53 years ago.
And the desire for freestanding homes remains, which means the more the population increases, the more someone has to miss out.
"The government's commitment to cut migration in order to get more Australians into homes has been shattered by the latest official data."
The numbers are stark.
🏠 Net new housing supply (year to March 2026): 174,500
✈️ Net permanent and long-term overseas arrivals: 489,300
IPA Senior Fellow Kevin You says the gap between population growth and housing construction is making home ownership harder for Australians.

High time for the Govt to implement the reccs of earlier inquiries: reform structures & subject partnerships to same rules of tax, transparency & whistleblowing as other large entities through corporations law, separate the functions of consultancy from audit & regulate them.
Labor’s “3 month ban” on new KPMG contracts won’t make an iota of difference when the Big 4 firm makes its sweet profits though contract amendments. The fact KPMG makes more money this way than from actual contracts shows the scale of the problem we face with the Big 4.
KPMG made $114 million from 149 contract amendments on top of their initial $73 million in head contracts in this financial year, Austender data shows. This means KPMG made more money from government contract amendments than from initial contracts it secured (as of 5 June 2026).
Sweden just passed a “Good Behaviour Law.”
Unpaid debts. Tax fraud. Undeclared work. Extremist links. Any of it-visa cancelled.
Australia should do this yesterday.
I’d add a few extras to the list:
— Hate preachers
— Welfare fraud
— Domestic violence
— Violent protests
— Glorifying terrorism
Residency is a privilege. Not a guaranteed outcome.
What would you add?
The problem with calling people racist for wanting sensible immigration and housing policy is that you eventually have to explain why you were wrong then or why you're racist now.
@kavapros Before we had running water me and my mates used to spit in a bowl to get enough liquid to make kava with kava powder. Great drinking other people’s saliva….its traditional!
@JasonClareMP Why isn’t early education part of the education system? Save parents from being exposed to dodgy service providers, it’s a bit like the NDIS!
Adelaide has one of the tightest and most unaffordable housing markets in the country, we heard today at the 4th hearing of the inquiry into intergenerational housing inequity. Today’s evidence is clear: Labor has failed South Australians on housing.
@TheKouk Yeah, but yeah, but yeah, the major parties might pick up on on some of the shit she speaks that resonates with most punters, including migrants, that is too many people immigrating all at once.
Migrants who arrived post-2000 definitively add more to demand for additional homes than the ability to deliver supply.
The government continues to pursue a narrative that simply doesn't add up.
And this is skewed to the upside by Kiwi's.
