My father never accepted Yoshi's addition to the Mario series only ever referring to him as "The Serpent". "The Serpent is at best a tool not a character", he'd say. One Christmas I asked for Yoshi's Story and instead received a bible. "The Serpent's story is in there", he said
Also the idea that a beautiful democracy would remain this beautiful as opposed to crumbling in this EXACT way after an actual fascist takeover is an insane take.
God please never put a blue checkmark Andor hater in front of me, I am never seeing the inside of a jail cell.
I wish people understood that both the prequels and Andor are highly aestheticized shows in completely different ways and that both do so in an excellent way.
The prequels are a Shakespearean melodrama, they show an elevated and enhanced world that could easily-
Andor production designer Luke Hull:
"It’s like this big white elephant in the middle of the city. ... I mean, I know that in the prequels you’ve got those big statues out the front, but we could say they’re around the other side. This was purely for giving some actual human scale to something that is so vast you couldn’t possibly build it."
Notice how, in this shot from The Phantom Menace, you can make out tiny figures of people milling about the plaza in front of the Senate building, looking like a bunch of ants. They are dwarfed by the aforementioned giant humanoid statues, which tower over the plaza on either side. The giant statues recede in rows into the distance, getting smaller and smaller with perspective, until we see that they themselves are dwarfed by the Senate building. Thus, this shot provides multiple layers of scale, emphasizing the incredible size of the Senate building.
Now compare this with the Andor shot. The Senate building is obscured by the new Calatrava architecture that has been inserted into the shot, making it harder to see. Compositionally, the Calatrava architecture also hogs the frame, making the Senate building look relatively smaller and less impressive. Compared to the Phantom Menace shot, the people milling around here also appear much larger in the frame, which further serves to make both the Calatrava architecture and the Senate building seem smaller in comparison.
The sense of enormous scale from the Phantom Menace shot has been utterly neutered in this new Andor shot. And unless I'm misreading the production designer, this was basically the point: they needed to essentially shrink the Senate area to facilitate having the actors walk around an actual physical location. The prequel Senate building in the background is almost treated like an unfortunately necessary inconvenience. My guess is that Tony Gilroy would rather not have had the prequel Senate building there at all, but that would have been too continuity-breaking to be allowed by LFL, even for Tony Gilroy. And that's probably the only reason it's even there.
be visually shifted for a show that chooses to ground itself. Neither vision acts to counter or discredit the other, they simply exist to tell different stories in a familiar world.
Shut the fuck up star wars fans I hate all of you.
A homemade dolly, 3-4 friends, & $50 split on a uhaul.
As long as it’s ground level (and these often come from suburban boomer homes so they are) it’s not easy but not hard either.
I’ve done this three times and haven’t spent more than $60 per move
I’m salty over my useless degree and will not stop being mad at liminality being turned into Gen-Z aesthetic slop that loses every ounce of meaning just to become a simulacrum of a concept nobody actually cares to define in order to truly make it understood.
There is no difference between how most people seem to view the concept of liminality and how they view stories such as Blood Meridian & Heart of Darkness.
I can’t quite explain how, but both have fallen victim to some sort of modern mass perception hollowness
This is all to say I am angry I studied English for four years just to listen to someone online try and change the definition of what a liminal space” is based wholly off of aesthetics.
The whole idea of “they never played by the rules because they never bothered to learn” is perhaps one of the most important things to keep in mind now, and it somehow came from a show produced by fucking Disney.
Fun fact, if a foreign nation came into our country and arrested Trump, and took him back to their country to face “justice”… Millions of people would be celebrating in the streets. That doesn’t make it legal or just, or constitutional.
If a foreign nation went in Israel & arrested Benjamin Netanyahu, who has an international warrant for his arrest for war crimes, I would probably join people celebrating in the streets, but that wouldn’t make it just or legal or constitutional.
The ends can’t “justify the means” where the rule of law and international order is meant to prevail.
from the overall story.
I saw this need to explain everything in Stranger Things reading its head in S4, and I’m so disappointed to see this happen to an otherwise fascinating world.
Unnecessary knowledge kills fear and intrigue.
Years ago (around the same time as season 1, which I hadn’t watched) I had a world I was immensely passionate about. The concept wasn’t too far off from this, with “The Void” being a dark reflection of the world similar to the upsidedown. I reeearched and wrote for ages-
In case you didn’t catch these in Vol. 2, here are facts confirmed by the Duffers & the cast:
- Nancy and Jonathan didn’t get engaged, that scene at the lab is officially a breakup.
- In Will’s coming out scene, Mike does understand who Will is talking about (it’s not meant to be “ambiguous”).
- The Upside Down isn’t a full dimension, it’s a wormhole/bridge, held together by exotic matter, connecting Hawkins to the Abyss.
- “Operation Beanstalk” is the real endgame plan: let the worlds draw close, use the radio tower as the reach point, then El goes in mentally to hit Vecna where he actually lives.
- Meanwhile Eight’s “real” plan is the dangerous part: she wants them to stay behind when the bridge collapses (and Eleven appears to agree).
#StrangerThings5
about just how I could make it make sense with real physics, and the result was this strange overdone and over explained world that took away every ounce of intrigue from what was otherwise and interesting concept. I dropped the concept once I realize how much it took away -
Isn’t it funny how every time some conservative trad chud posts one of these pictures it’s just an ad? The ideal life is a 7up advertisement apparently.
one of the last old internet/forums culture moments I saw in the wild was this guy logging onto r/meth and was like hello! I am fighting in the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces and they pay us in meth! I love meth! and then posted photos of him rolling barrel bombs out of an An-26
