We need more investment/innovation in defensive AI. It is inevitable that AI will be used against us by scammers, criminals, governments, and other bad actors. As AI improves, so too does the sophistication and danger of these attacks. How many of our existing computer systems would remain secure if attacked by an AI super-hacker? How do we know if we are talking with a real person or a deep-fake? How do we know if our sources of information are accurate or reliable? How do we defend against the next bioengineered virus?
One product I would like to see is something I call "User Agent". It's a personal AI programmed to guard and defend our individual rights and interests. Like an ideal lawyer, it should always be working for and representing our interests, not those of corporations or governments trying to control and manipulate us. Ideally we would have the equivalent of "attorney-client privilege" with this AI, meaning that it keeps secrets and will not report us to the thought-police. It monitors our communications and accounts to guard against fraud and hacking attempts. It helps us to stay well informed by automatically reference checking the information we consume, providing helpful background and context (similar to community notes on X, but for everything). It's a trusted health and financial advisor that can warn us away from scams while surfacing more promising and beneficial options. Ideally it could even monitor our physical environment and integrate information such as crime reports to help maintain physical security.
What are the best startups/teams building defensive AI? I'm especially curious if anyone has good thoughts on how to defend against engineered viruses, since gain-of-function is only going to get easier and more dangerous.

This company (Pure Digital) had an interesting history & great acquisition timing; they sold to Cisco in ‘09 for $590M
They had raised an A from Moritz @Sequoia & a B from Dunlevie @Benchmark (all in 2002) for a digital still *disposable* camera.
It was $20 and you had to bring it back to the store (they had a partnership with CVS) for processing. They would give you a CD with your photos then wipe the data and resell it for $20.
Cell phone cameras started to get really good shortly after launch & it wasn’t a huge success.
Cell phone cameras didn’t have video recording ability at the time so they pivoted to a disposable video camera but the same business- $30 camera, you shoot then take it to the store and get a DVD with your video, they wipe it and resell.
The product got bad reviews & didn’t sell very well. By 2006, technology had gotten good enough that Pure created a digital point and shoot video camera that sold under their own branding for $150-200.
It did very well- $50M in sales in 2007, $150M in 2008. I worked at Amazon in 2008 in the consumer electronics group- consumer video cameras were one of the hot categories (along with GPS, micro-laptops, digital video recording devices, digital p&s cameras - all things that don’t really exist anymore mostly thanks to cellphones).
At the time at Amazon we thought that blogs would be replaced by “vlogs” - we weren’t completely wrong as that’s basically what stories are.
In 2008, they released the 1080p camera below. It was called “flip” because you could flip out the USB cord and plug it directly into your computer. They made it super simple, and it had its own video editing software & handled low light much better than the cellphone cameras of the time. Keep in mind the iPhone had launched in 2007.
In 2009, Cisco acquired Flip for $590M. I remember many of us thinking at the time this was crazy since video would obviously be bundled with cell phones AND Cisco was not a consumer company at all!
Ultimately Cisco discontinued the Flip cam less than 2 years after the acquisition.
The CEO of Pure Digital, Jonathan Kaplan went on to start another Sequoia and Benchmark backed business… he raised a $10M seed round for a Grilled Cheese franchise called “The Melt.”
It didn’t work as hoped and Kaplan now serves as the US Ambassador to Singapore!
