This is how you discuss a question about changing poverty rates: with a clear question and reasoning for the choice of measure. SPM is really effective at helping understand how well income support programs boost families.
2/3: Another way to look at these trends: how strongly were taxes/transfers reducing child poverty rates in the given year? The record-low child poverty rates in 2020 and 2021 are attributable to the temporarily-strengthened welfare state.
The same way, people benefit from different weather-related measures to answer questions about how to prepare for and respond to the day ahead. Both poverty and weather are fantastically complicated phenomena that don’t boil down easily to just a few numbers.
The response also relies on the mistaken notion that there is one “correct” poverty measure. There isn’t. Different mechanisms for measuring poverty exist to answer the range of policy questions being asked.
