“Can I… can I talk about this? That performative male thing? Can I bring it up? No, I mean – so I went to Busan, and I guess someone snapped a photo [of me]. When I rode the subway? At the time, really, nobody recognised me, so it hurt in one corner of my heart… but at least I could take my mask off and ride comfortably. It did sting that no one recognised me, but anyway I just got on and went.

That day, just then, my wireless earphones ran out of battery, so I had to rush and buy wired earphones, and I was using those like that. And really, since I had nothing else to do, I just read a book. And right then, just like that, I got snapped. So I thought, ah, guess I got photographed.

Right, right – the pink socks. They were really chic, eh? Anyway, so later a friend KaTalked me, sending me this trending type-of-male meme. It said ‘performative-type male’, apparently a phrase that’s been floating around lately. Like, a guy walking around with wired earphones in, holding a book? So 😂 that was literally me. I was like, ah, I’m actually really a performative male. 😂 It matched way too perfectly. 😂😂 It’s like… the style of living a false life. And I thought, ah, I could be that. That’s when I learnt one more thing about myself – that maybe it looks like I’m living a life of lies. A fake life~”

#JINYOUNG: I think the important thing is that ‘my people’ are always in front of the door I’ve closed. That’s why I think it’s important, when things are difficult, to not feel ashamed and to go talk to my people. The people who love me, they can read my face and instantly know how I’m feeling. When I open up to them, I often realize things weren’t as serious as I’d thought. And just sharing a little can bring so much relief. That’s how it is for me, at least.

BamBam talked about a moment he had with Jihyo that really touched him 🥹💚

🐍: It was during a really tough time for me right after EXchange ended. After the show ended, I was doing tons of variety shows and that stuff can be draining. Like, doing variety always sucks the energy out of you. You gotta force so much energy on variety shows—it’s tough, right? So after COVID hit, we kinda lost touch for a while but then out of nowhere, we reconnected and Jihyo texted, “how’ve you been?” I told her, “noona, I’m kinda struggling” and she goes “come over, I’ll cook for you.” And I live alone right no parents around either, she said, “maybe it’s because you haven’t had a home-cooked meal” then grilled some fish for me, heated up the chicken feet she had in the freezer that she was saving for herself (JH: I only give them to people I really care about!) she made the soup too and we talked. After that day, I honestly felt better, like the moment where you feel, “I’ve gotta get back up”? yeah it really helped.
