@andreana042 Very true. Looking back I feel as though a lot of us from childhood and onward were conditioned to see things a certain way when we should be respectful of other cultures and be celebrating diversity and each other.
Assuaging parents expectations and collision of different cultures definitely isn't a walk in the park.. gharibs attitude of actually wanting to share more of her culture with others rly touched my heart. at the end of the day, don't be put into a box, u r still u boo #HongLit
@Tiana3151 I had such a pleasantly difficult time reading jemisin's story, but nonetheless I agree. It was rly novel and interesting to see a story written in such manner.
I really enjoyed mootoos way of describing her experience of expectations and authenticity. Made me reflect on how I view and feel of Korean culture and traditions. #HongLit
Can't get over the interview with his father towards the end of vietgone. Despite all the comedic gesture and interjection, it all came back around. super raw, complex. it's like there's trauma but a sense of togetherness to some degree. a very good kind of weird I feel #HongLit
@mrsgrimmond Yeah that last note the father made at the end, his input on war was rly something. Not everyone's gonna be pointing fingers at each other right? So complex, but to see it written down sorta gave me a peace of mind.
Vietgone reminds me of Franny Choi's poem earlier in the semester about fetishizing asian ppl. There's a quite a bit of sexual/sexy scenes in the play so it was a bit refreshing(and fun) to see. Just made me think "nice. I see whatya doin there Nguyen" #HongLit
@mrsgrimmond Couldn't agree more with that. I could picture how early she must have had to mature and be grown in order to help her parents given the language barrier.
(godimsolatetothisbuthereitis) cathyp.hong has such a way with description. The whole idea of reclaiming, empowering, and embracing this "bad english" is a bold reminder to be proud of yourslf. The mixing of korean and english into profane konglish was so relatable lol #HongLit
