Sports and Activities With the Correct English Verbs to Use With Them

In English, we don’t use the same verb for every sport or exercise; we follow special patterns:

🔹Play + sport
We use play with ball games, team sports, and racket sports.
Play Soccer
Example: “I play soccer every Saturday with my friends.”
(Soccer is also called “football” in many countries.)
Play Golf
Example: “My father likes to play golf on the weekend.”
Play Basketball
Example: “We play basketball at school after classes.”
✍️Tip: Use “play” for most games that involve a ball or a team (play tennis, play volleyball, play baseball, etc.).

🔹Go + activity (usually -ing form)
We use go with activities that involve movement from one place to another or physical exercise done outdoors or in a special place.
Go Swimming
Example: “In summer, I go swimming at the beach.”
Go Running
Example: “She goes running every morning before work.”
Go Cycling
Example: “They go cycling in the park on Sundays.”
(We can also say “ride a bike,” but “go cycling” is very common.)
✍️Tip: Use “go” + -ing for many recreational physical activities: go hiking, go fishing, go shopping, go dancing, go jogging, etc.

🔹Do + activity
We use do with exercises, martial arts, fitness activities, and some individual sports that are not ball games.
Do Weightlifting
Example: “He does weightlifting at the gym three times a week.”
Do Karate
Example: “My daughter does karate after school.”
Do Yoga
Example: “I do yoga every evening to relax.”
✍️Tip: Use “do” for: do gymnastics, do aerobics, do Pilates, do taekwondo, do judo, do exercise, do sports (general), etc.

🔸We often use these verbs in the Present Simple for habits:
“I play soccer.” / “She goes swimming.” / “He does yoga.”
🔸For plans or arrangements, we use Present Continuous:
“I am playing basketball tomorrow.”
“We are going cycling this weekend.”
🔸Question form:
“Do you play soccer?”
“Does she go running every day?”
“What sports do you do?”
🔸Negative:
“I don’t play golf.”
“He doesn’t do weightlifting.”
