The issue of the NEET-PG qualifying cut-off dropping so low that minus 40 marks qualified reached the Supreme Court.

The Court sought the Centre's opinion.

The Centre set up a 12-member expert committee, which proposed replacing marks-based merit with a rank-based system. The National Medical Commission approved it, and the proposal is now before the Court.

This is a clever fix! The headline "Rank 2,00,000 secured MS Orthopedics in NEET-PG" sounds far less alarming to the public than "Candidate with minus 40 marks secured MS Orthopedics."

Problem solved, outrage avoided, and public trust in the medical system restored.
