I spent weeks coding a massive text-based RPG. Nobody wanted to play it.
I wanted to build the first and ultimate Fighting Fantasy gamebook on @PlayAstrocade.
I condensed 700 chapters of Naruto into 370+ paragraphs.
I wrote custom Python scripts just to validate the JSON story, map the 12 converging paths, 3 secret routes, and 5 dead ends. Imagine the backend effort.
The result? It flopped hard.
Why? Because I let my developer ego blind me. I built a complex RPG for a casual mobile audience that wants instant action.
Effort means absolutely nothing if you build for the wrong crowd.

How did I create this game on @PlayAstrocade?
1. I always start with a very simple, broad prompt. The AI works pretty much like humans in this regard: if you give it a wall of text full of rules and demands, it will skip most of them and only retain the basic idea.
If I get a decent result on my first try, I keep building on it. If not, I delete it and try again.
2. I tested my game constantly. The first objective is making sure that the core gameplay is absolutely bug-free.
3. I added essential mechanics to improve the game feel. In this specific game, having clear Correct and Incorrect feedback is key.
4. Using EDITOR mode was mandatory. The AI generated a couple of puzzles, but many didn't make sense, and the "Distractor" emojis were always the same ones.
Fixing each puzzle or generating new ones by chatting would have taken me ages. That's why I started thinking about seamless scalability and level editing.
5. I created and/or reviewed more than 90 levels! This was pretty fast because of the Level editor I added to EDITOR mode.
7. Added some polish and improved the game visuals. I didn't want to overdeliver here because it's not for a Game Jam contest. Making the game feel good and look clean was my main objective.
8. Implemented a nice loading scene where my game loads 2 of the most-used sounds, and then lazy loads the rest of the sounds that are only used later in the game.
9. Even though the game is simple, I made sure to prompt for performance and memory leak fixes. I wanted my game to run smoothly on any device (PC and Mobile) at max FPS.
10. I generated my thumbnail on the free ChatGPT. This was not needed, but it usually generates catchier images. Then prompted to use that exact image.
11. Enabled leaderboards and implemented persistent saved data (coins/score and level). This was to incentivize players to keep playing and increase their score constantly even after looping through all the 90+ levels.
This was a long one, but if you read it all, let me know in the comments!
Stay tuned for my next post, where I will show you exactly what I built in EDITOR mode.

Why did I create EMOJI GUESS on @PlayAstrocade?
This type of game is already battle-tested and runs well on whatever device.
Gameplay is so simple that anyone can play.
Similar games have performed well on the platform, so I'm not taking a huge leap of faith.
The game has high scalability. I can easily add more content or duplicate it into an improved version if it succeeds.
In the next post, I'll tell you how I did it and show you how easy it is to scale it using the spectacular Astrocade Editor mode.
Stay tuned!

The most interesting part of this leaderboard isn't the $2k earnings. It's the green column.
Although some creators produce many new games and benefit from the constant activity, that's not where the true gold is.
If you look closely, almost all the creators at the top survive with the majority of their plays coming from older games.
Build fun and more polished core loops on @PlayAstrocade, and your old portfolio will support you for months.

A game a day with Erika: Game #1
Today, I am featuring Frosting Frenzy, a simple cake game where you apply frosting and place decorations on your cake to match a quirky design prompt before the timer runs out.
This is my first game in the top picks/players' choice. This was one of my early games is currently sitting at 2.2 million plays with a 1:07 median time.
The game itself was easy to play and had a great core loop. People were having fun just completing orders and making cakes.
One of the things that the game eventually faced was loading issues, and some people didn’t know what to put for certain orders.
If I had to recreate the game again (which I did), I would focus on adding lazy loading and object pooling to make sure the game ran well. I would also add clearer instructions for the cake orders.
One of the things I learned was that a basic game like my cake game can do well, but having long loading times can hurt it.
The last thing I realized was that even though this game was created fast, I would still want to spend extra time on future cake games to make sure everything is polished and play-tested normally.

What was your first game that really kicked off? Let me know in the comments below.

I just published a new game on @PlayAstrocade.
This is a very simple game, but it doesn't mean it can't be successful.
It's called EMOJI GUESS, and in my next post, I'll explain why I decided to create it and how I did it.
As you can see in the video, the results from the first prompt were already good enough. It gave me something I could work with.
Would you have kept this first draft too?
Follow along!

People are making $1k to $2k a month on @PlayAstrocade, but the data on how they do it is wild.
I pulled the estimated earnings for some of June's top creators.
We have creators dropping 60+ games a month. They are absolute volume machines, crushing it with consistent new releases to drive daily traffic.
Then you have creators who only released 2 games all month and made the exact same amount. Mainly passive traffic from older hits.
It proves you don't have to fit one specific mold. Both the active grind and the passive asset strategies can be profitable if you know what you are doing.

Did you know I have 643 games published so far on Astrocade?
Even though not all of them are successful, I had fun making every single one of them.
Starting later today, I will be kicking off a new series called a game a day with Erika.
Each day, I will showcase one game I made, where I will cover:
-What the game is about
-How it performed
-What worked well
-What didn’t work well
-What I would improve
-Any of the lessons I learned
I hope you’ll follow along and maybe discover a few games to play!
As I share my journey, I hope you can jump in as well. Let me know what games you published or are working on?

I made $300 this month creating games on @PlayAstrocade.
It definitely wasn't my best month.
I tried a different approach, and it didn't work as well as I expected.
I'll break down what I changed, what went wrong, and what I learned in my next post.
#MadeOnAstrocade#indiedev #aigamedev
I'm not done yet.
Making $59/day (148k significant plays) on @PlayAstrocade, but going to push even higher this month.
I'll be using a new strategy and aiming for at least $2,000 from plays by the end of July.
