@KelseyTuoc What magic sauce do people think they teach you in an education degree?
My mom said her degree wasn't worthless, but was nothing compared to the years she had as a camp counselor, babysitter, scout leader, etc.
@tracewoodgrains Ha, my experience has always been "I love SSC and its comments section, I should read LW and HPMOR... oh god this is boring and/or pretentious when it isn't Scott explaining it." HPMOR has far too much "smartest guy in the room" syndrome.
@ForbesTutt10128@monsterhunter45 Higher education as "making well rounded aristocrats" works when the students are aristocrats, or when college is cheap enough they don't have to be.
That's the class divide here - whether 4 years of study needs a financial ROI.
@BretDevereaux@AlienBooger@IVMiles "In the major" isn't quite correct. It's just that our concept of "well rounded" is "know mechanical *and* electrical *and* computer engineering" rather than "English and Spanish and History."
@tracewoodgrains My advice to my kids - people have a right to be wrong about a lot of things in their personal lives. We can think they're wrong and still love them and get along with each other, as long as we respect that right.
@TomChivers@BartAndrews@jessesingal I wonder if advocates should focus less on "human extinction" doomsday scenarios and more "practically achievable now" ones. Hard for me to see how we get to kill all humans - much easier to see a swarm deciding to take out Mastercard or blackmailing major polticians.
@s8mb I still feel like, even if we invented a super-intelligence tomorrow, there are a lot of steps between that and extinction.
That said, there are almost no steps between that and bringing our entire economy to a halt until we rebuild our computer networks from scratch.
@CathyYoung63@HannahGraceLong I'd also argue that for complex social role/mental health interactions like this, innate differences barely matter compared to expressed ones. Whether you can or can't flip our sons & daughters to a different arrangement of cares doesn't change what adults today need.
@CathyYoung63@HannahGraceLong Language is just bad at expressing distributions. "If you graphed men/women on needs love vs needs power axis, you find a bimod distribution with men on average 2 points higher on the power axis" isn't nearly as pithy...
@BradRTorgersen I think we can both say that their beliefs are Islamic and that not all Muslims share their beliefs. Islam isn't monolithic, just like Christianity isn't.
@tracewoodgrains Imagining an AI who is massively smarter than the average person is... well, aren't there already people who are massively smarter than the average person? You listen to them, but do you let them do all your thinking for you?
@Nick_Gardner0@monsterhunter45 Even the defense agreed she killed her kids. It's whether (under Massachusetts law) the prosecution proved she was mentally sane enough to know it was bad while she did it.
@Tyler_A_Harper I think it's pretty easy to get to "take down all digital infrastructure" or even "blackmail it's way into political power" failure modes. Both of those are bad but far short if near term apocalyptic. We're nowhere close to giving it enough physical infrastructure.
@TwoRulesOfWar@BradRTorgersen@RocketPulpHack Yeah, much better to think of it as an isolated human colony. They won't have much loyalty to the people who sent them. Whether they have loyalty to their own government depends on how they're governed, and will be messy and human but probably functional-ish like most villages.
@BradRTorgersen@RocketPulpHack They might not grasp the mission.. but what else are they going to do? I figure it's a lot like the grandchildren of settlers -- we're not most of us trying to carry on the Pilgrim's vision of god's country on earth, but we're still here getting by.
@BradRTorgersen@DaddyWarpig Watching old movies with my kids, they are amazed by what you could do with practical effects and love how well they've held up over time, especially compared to early cgi.
