1. Fremont Optimus Production Line

• Space has been cleared from the former Model S/X lines
• The first Optimus line has arrived in Fremont from Tesla’s automation teams in the Midwest and Germany
• Installation has already started
• Machines are in the final stages of FAT testing
• The first line is modular, allowing fast bring-up
• One line can be installed in 2–3 days and started within about a week
• After proving the first sub-line, Tesla has around 40 more sub-lines to go
• Sub-lines will handle components such as actuators, torso, battery, limbs, and more
• Make-vs-buy decisions depend on supplier capability, IP protection, investment size, and design-change risk

2. How Tesla’s Car Manufacturing Strengths Apply to Optimus

• Tesla has already learned the hard parts of scaling through cars and batteries
• This includes factory logistics, supply-chain depth, multi-sourcing, and crisis management
• Optimus benefits directly from that foundation
• The same experienced teams are designing the lines with a focus on precision, repeatability, OEE, and uptime
• The BOM cost of Optimus is lower than that of a car
• Tesla has a unique trifecta: scale manufacturing, electric motor design, and real-world AI
• Optimus is more like a car than a consumer electronics product because it requires high functional safety and multi-axis control

3. Why the Humanoid Form Factor Matters

• Optimus needs to feel like it belongs in human spaces
• Tesla is starting with a C-3PO-like humanoid form
• Over time, Tesla may expand into other robot forms, similar to R2-D2

Bottom line:
Tesla is not treating Optimus like a gadget. It is building Optimus with the same manufacturing discipline, safety mindset, and scaling playbook that it used for cars and batteries.
