A Chinese travel creator, Xiao Jony, stopped in a Nigerian market to taste the food. Men from the crowd closed in and asked for money. When he asked why, they did not invent a fine, a tax, or a service. They said the quiet part: they were Nigerian citizens and he was not, so they had the right to take from him.

On a ten-kilometre stretch of road he met more than twenty checkpoints. Each one asked again. By the time the journey ended, his verdict was simple: do not come to Nigeria.

This is the Lagos method, now wearing a national face. Tinubu’s city taught a generation that the street is a till, that a uniform or a crowd is a receipt, and that the stranger exists to be harvested. What used to be the tout’s corner has become a theory of the state: belonging as a license to extract. The market men were not improvising. They were speaking the grammar of a country being built in the image of its most successful city of thugs.

A nation that treats the outsider as a wallet will soon treat its own people the same way. The checkpoint does not distinguish for long between the foreigner and the citizen who cannot pay. What begins as a levy on the visitor ends as a habit of the soul: a people who cannot imagine welcome, only a price. Empires have fallen for less than this small, daily theft of dignity. A country that lives by the roadside demand will one day find that the road leads nowhere, and that the only thing it has built is a map of its own hunger.
